O God whom I praise, do not ig-nore me!
For they say cruel and de-cep-tive things to me; they lie to me.
They sur-round me and say hate-ful things;

They re-pay my love with ac-cu-sa-tion, but I con-tin-ue to pray.
They re-pay me e-vil for good, and hate for love.
Ap-point an e-vil man to tes-ti-fy a-gainst him!
May an ac-cus-er stand at his right side!

When he is judged, he will be found guilt-y!
Then his prayer will be re-gard-ed as sin-ful.
May his days be few!
May an-oth-er take his job!

May his chil-dren be fa-ther-less, and his wife a wid-ow!
May his chil-dren roam a-round beg-ging,
ask-ing for hand-outs as they leave their ru-ined home!
May the cred-i-tor seize all he owns!

May stran-gers loot his prop-er-ty!
May no one show him kind-ness!
May no one have com-pas-sion on his fa-ther-less chil-dren!
May his de-scen-dants be cut off!

May the mem-o-ry of them be wiped out
by the time the next gen-er-a-tion ar-rives!
May his an-ces-tors sins be re-mem-bered by the Lord!
May his moth-er's sin not be for-got-ten!

May the Lord be con-stant-ly a-ware of them,
and cut off the mem-o-ry of his chil-dren from the earth!
For he nev-er bo-thered to show kind-ness;
he har-assed the op-pressed and need-y,

and killed the dis-heart-ened.
He loved to curse oth-ers,
so those curs-es have come up-on him.
He had no de-sire to bless an-y-one,

so he has ex-pe-ri-enced no bles-sing.
He made curs-ing a way of life,
so curs-es poured into his stom-ach like wa-ter
Curs-es seeped into his bones like oil.

May a curse at-tach it-self to him,
like a gar-ment one puts on, or a belt one wears con-tin-ual-ly!
May the Lord re-pay my ac-cus-ers in this way,
those who say e-vil things a-bout me!

O sov-ereign Lord, in-ter-vene on my be-half
for the sake of your rep-u-ta-tion!
Be-cause your loy-al love is good, de-liv-er me!
For I am op-pressed and need-y,

and my heart beats vio-lent-ly with-in me.
I am fad-ing a-way like a shad-ow at the end of the day;
I am shak-en off like a lo-cust.
I am so starved my knees shake;

I have turned into skin and bones.
I am dis-dained by them.
When they see me, they shake their heads.
Help me, O Lord my God!

Be-cause you are faith-ful to me, de-liv-er me!
Then they will real-ize this is your work,
and that you, Lord, have ac-com-plished it.
They curse, but you will bless.

When they at-tack, they will be hu-mil-i-at-ed,
but your serv-ant will re-joice.
My ac-cus-ers will be cov-ered with shame,
and draped in hu-mil-i-a-tion as if it were a robe.

I will thank the Lord pro-fuse-ly,
in the mid-dle of a crowd I will praise him,
be-cause he stands at the right hand of the need-y,
to de-liv-er him from those who threat-en his life.

Readings

A reading from Judges 13:15-24


Manoah said to the Lord’s angel, “Please stay here awhile, so we can prepare a young goat for you to eat.” The Lord’s angel said to Manoah, “If I stay, I will not eat your food. But if you want to make a burnt sacrifice to the Lord, you should offer it.” (He said this because Manoah did not know that he was the Lord’s angel.) Manoah said to the Lord’s angel, “Tell us your name, so we can honor you when your announcement comes true.” The Lord’s angel said to him, “You should not ask me my name, because you cannot comprehend it.” Manoah took a young goat and a grain offering and offered them on a rock to the Lord. The Lord’s messenger did an amazing thing as Manoah and his wife watched. As the flame went up from the altar toward the sky, the Lord’s angel went up in it while Manoah and his wife watched. They fell facedown to the ground.

The Lord’s angel did not appear again to Manoah and his wife. After all this happened Manoah realized that the visitor had been the Lord’s angel. Manoah said to his wife, “We will certainly die, because we have seen a supernatural being!” But his wife said to him, “If the Lord wanted to kill us, he would not have accepted the burnt offering and the grain offering from us. He would not have shown us all these things, or have spoken to us like this just now.”

Manoah’s wife gave birth to a son and named him Samson. The child grew and the Lord empowered him.

To you all an-gels, all the pow-ers of heav-en,
Cher-u-bim and Ser-a-phim, sing in end-less praise:
Ho-ly, ho-ly, ho-ly Lord, God of pow-er and might,
heav-en and earth are full of your glo-ry.

The glo-ri-ous com-pa-ny of a-pos-tles praise you.
The no-ble fel-low-ship of proph-ets praise you.
The white robed ar-my of mar-tyrs praise you.
Through-out the world the ho-ly Church ac-claims you;

Fath-er, of maj-es-ty un-bound-ed,
your true and on-ly Son, wor-thy of all wor-ship,

Three in one, we praise you for ev-er.

You, Christ, are the king of glo-ry,

A reading from Acts 6:1-15

Now in those days, when the disciples were growing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Greek-speaking Jews against the native Hebraic Jews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the twelve called the whole group of the disciples together and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to wait on tables. But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well-attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this necessary task. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” The proposal pleased the entire group, so they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a Gentile convert to Judaism from Antioch. They stood these men before the apostles, who prayed and placed their hands on them. The word of God continued to spread, the number of disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

Now Stephen, full of grace and power, was performing great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. But some men from the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called), both Cyrenians and Alexandrians, as well as some from Cilicia and the province of Asia, stood up and argued with Stephen. Yet they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they secretly instigated some men to say, “We have heard this man speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.” They incited the people, the elders, and the experts in the law; then they approached Stephen, seized him, and brought him before the council. They brought forward false witnesses who said, “This man does not stop saying things against this holy place and the law. For we have heard him saying that Jesus the Nazarene will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” All who were sitting in the council looked intently at Stephen and saw his face was like the face of an angel.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
