Send out your light

I love you, Lord, my source of strength!
The Lord is my high ridge,
my strong-hold, my de-liv-er-er.
My God is my rock-y sum-mit

where I take shel-ter, my shield,

and I was de-liv-ered from my en-e-my.

The waves of death en-gulfed me,

a thick cloud was un-der his feet.

He shroud-ed him-self in dark-ness, in thick rain clouds.
From the bright-ness in front of him came hail and fier-y coals.

The Lord thun-dered in the sky;
and the Most High shout-ed.
He shot his ar-rows and scat-tered them,
man-y light-ning bolts and rout-ed them.

The depths of the sea were ex-posed;
the in-ner re-gions of the world
were un-cov-ered by your bat-tle cry, Lord,
by the pow-er-ful breath from your nose.

He reached down from a-bove
and he took hold of me;
he pulled me from the surg-ing wat-er.
He res-cued me from my strong en-e-mies,

from those who hate me,
for they were too strong for me.
They con-front-ed me in my day of ca-lam-i-ty,
but the Lord de-liv-ered me.

He brought me out into a wide o-pen place;
he de-liv-ered me be-cause he was pleased with me.
The Lord re-paid me for my god-ly deeds;
he re-ward-ed my blame-less be-hav-ior.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,

Readings

A reading from Job 8:1-10, 20-22

Then Bildad the Shuhite spoke up and said:

“How long will you speak these things,
seeing that the words of your mouth
are like a great wind?

Does God pervert justice?
Or does the Almighty pervert what is right?

If your children sinned against him,
he gave them over to the penalty of their sin.

But if you will look to God,
and make your supplication to the Almighty,

if you become pure and upright,
even now he will rouse himself for you,
and will restore your righteous home.

Your beginning will seem so small,
since your future will flourish.

“For inquire now of the former generation,
and pay attention to the findings
of their ancestors;

For we were born yesterday and do not have knowledge,
since our days on earth are but a shadow.

Will they not instruct you and speak to you,
and bring forth words
from their understanding?

“Surely, God does not reject a blameless man,
nor does he grasp the hand
of the evildoers.

He will yet fill your mouth with laughter,
and your lips with gladness.

Those who hate you will be clothed with shame,
and the tent of the wicked will be no more.”

A reading from Acts 10:17-33

Now while Peter was puzzling over what the vision he had seen could signify, the men sent by Cornelius had learned where Simon’s house was and approached the gate. They called out to ask if Simon, known as Peter, was staying there as a guest. While Peter was still thinking seriously about the vision, the Spirit said to him, “Look! Three men are looking for you. But get up, go down, and accompany them without hesitation, because I have sent them.” So Peter went down to the men and said, “Here I am, the person you’re looking for. Why have you come?” They said, “Cornelius the centurion, a righteous and God-fearing man, well spoken of by the whole Jewish nation, was directed by a holy angel to summon you to his house and to hear a message from you.” So Peter invited them in and entertained them as guests.

On the next day he got up and set out with them, and some of the brothers from Joppa accompanied him. The following day he entered Caesarea. Now Cornelius was waiting anxiously for them and had called together his relatives and close friends. So when Peter came in, Cornelius met him, fell at his feet, and worshiped him. But Peter helped him up, saying, “Stand up. I too am a mere mortal.” Peter continued talking with him as he went in, and he found many people gathered together. He said to them, “You know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or visit a Gentile, yet God has shown me that I should call no person defiled or ritually unclean. Therefore when you sent for me, I came without any objection. Now may I ask why you sent for me?” Cornelius replied, “Four days ago at this very hour, at three o’clock in the afternoon, I was praying in my house, and suddenly a man in shining clothing stood before me and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your acts of charity have been remembered before God. Therefore send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. This man is staying as a guest in the house of Simon the tanner, by the sea.’ Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.”

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
