O Lord, the king re-joic-es

He asked you to sus-tain his life,

For the king trusts in the Lord,

Yes, they in-tend to do you harm;
they dream up schemes, but do not suc-ceed.

For you make them re-treat
when you aim your ar-rows at them.
Rise up, O Lord, in strength!

A reading from Job 9:1; 10:1-9, 16-22

Then Job answered:

“I am weary of my life;
I will complain without restraint;
I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

I will say to God, ‘Do not condemn me;
tell me why you are contending with me.’

Is it good for you to oppress,
to despise the work of your hands,
while you smile
on the schemes of the wicked?

“Do you have eyes of flesh,
or do you see as a human being sees?

Are your days like the days of a mortal,
or your years like the years of a mortal,

that you must search out my iniquity,
and inquire about my sin,

although you know that I am not guilty,
and that there is no one who can deliver
out of your hand?

“Your hands have shaped me and made me,
but now you destroy me completely.

Remember that you have made me as with the clay;
will you return me to dust?

If I lift myself up,
you hunt me as a fierce lion,
and again you display your power against me.

You bring new witnesses against me,
and increase your anger against me;
relief troops come against me.

“Why then did you bring me out from the womb?
I should have died
and no eye would have seen me!

I should have been as though I had never existed;
I should have been carried
right from the womb to the grave!

Are not my days few?
Cease, then, and leave me alone,
that I may find a little comfort,

before I depart, never to return,
to the land of darkness
and the deepest shadow,

to the land of utter darkness,
like the deepest darkness,
and the deepest shadow and disorder,
where even the light is like darkness.”

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glo-ry of the Lord has dawned up-on you.

Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.

Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will nev-er be shut.
They will call you, The Cit-y of the Lord,

Vio-lence will no more be heard in your land,

A reading from Acts 11:1-18

Now the apostles and the brothers who were throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles too had accepted the word of God. So when Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers took issue with him, saying, “You went to uncircumcised men and shared a meal with them. ” But Peter began and explained it to them point by point, saying, “I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision, an object something like a large sheet descending, being let down from heaven by its four corners, and it came to me. As I stared I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, and wild birds. I also heard a voice saying to me, ‘Get up, Peter; slaughter and eat!’ But I said, ‘Certainly not, Lord, for nothing defiled or ritually unclean has ever entered my mouth!’ But the voice replied a second time from heaven, ‘What God has made clean, you must not consider ritually unclean!’ This happened three times, and then everything was pulled up to heaven again. At that very moment, three men sent to me from Caesarea approached the house where we were staying. The Spirit told me to accompany them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house. He informed us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying, ‘Send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter, who will speak a message to you by which you and your entire household will be saved. ’ Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning. And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. ’ Therefore if God gave them the same gift as he also gave us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to hinder God?” When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised God, saying, “So then, God has granted the repentance that leads to life even to the Gentiles. ”

The glo-ri-ous com-pa-ny of a-pos-tles praise you.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,

A Collect for Saturdays

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
