How bless-ed is the one
who does not fol-low the ad-vice of the wick-ed,
or stand in the path-way with sin-ners,
or sit in the as-sem-bly of scoff-ers!

In-stead he finds pleas-ure
in o-bey-ing the Lord's com-mands;
he med-i-tates on his com-mands day and night.
He is like a tree plant-ed by flow-ing streams;

It yields its fruit at the prop-er time,
and its leaves nev-er fall off.
He suc-ceeds in eve-ry-thing he at-tempts.
But not so with the wick-ed!

In-stead they are like wind-driv-en chaff.
For this rea-son the wick-ed can-not with-stand judg-ment,
nor can sin-ners join the as-sem-bly of the god-ly.
Cer-tain-ly the Lord guards the way of the god-ly,

The way of the wick-ed ends in de-struc-tion.
How bless-ed is the one who does not fol-low their ad-vice

Why do the na-tions re-bel?
Why are the coun-tries de-vis-ing plots that will fail?
The kings of the earth
form a u-nit-ed front;

the rul-ers col-lab-o-rate
a-gainst the Lord and his a-noint-ed king.
They say, Let us tear off
the shack-les they have put on us!

Let us free our-selves from their rope!
The one en-throned in heav-en laughs in dis-gust;
the Lord taunts them.
Then he an-gri-ly speaks to them

and ter-ri-fies them in his rage, say-ing,
I my-self have in-stalled my king
on Zi-on, my ho-ly hill.
The king says, I will an-nounce the Lords de-cree.

He said to me: You are my son!
This ver-y day I have be-come your fath-er!
Ask me, and I will give you
the na-tions as your in-her-it-ance,

the ends of the earth
as your per-son-al prop-er-ty.
You will break them
with an i-ron scep-ter;

You will smash them like a pot-ters jar!
So now, you kings, do what is wise;
you rul-ers of the earth,
sub-mit to cor-rec-tion!

Serve the Lord in fear! Re-pent in ter-ror!
Give God sin-cere hom-age!
Oth-er-wise he will be an-gry,
and you will sure-ly die

who take shel-ter in him!

A reading from Job 4:1; 5:1-11, 17-21, 26-27

Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:

“Call now! Is there anyone who will answer you?
To which of the holy ones will you turn?

For wrath kills the foolish person,
and anger slays the silly one.
I myself have seen the fool taking root,
but suddenly I cursed his place of residence.
His children are far from safety,
and they are crushed at the place where judgment is rendered,
nor is there anyone to deliver them.
The hungry eat up his harvest,
and take it even from behind the thorns,
and the thirsty pant for their wealth.
For evil does not come up from the dust,
nor does trouble spring up from the ground,
but people are born to trouble,
as surely as the sparks fly upward.
“But as for me, I would seek God,
and to God I would set forth my case.
He does great and unsearchable things,
marvelous things without number;
he gives rain on the earth,
and sends water on the fields;
he sets the lowly on high,
that those who mourn are raised to safety.
“Therefore, blessed is the man whom God corrects,
so do not despise the discipline of the Almighty.
For he wounds, but he also bandages;
he strikes, but his hands also heal.
He will deliver you from six calamities;
yes, in seven no evil will touch you.
In time of famine he will redeem you from death,
and in time of war from the power of the sword.
You will be protected from malicious gossip,
and will not be afraid of the destruction when it comes.
You will come to your grave in a full age,
As stacks of grain are harvested in their season.
Look, we have investigated this, so it is true.
Hear it, and apply it for your own good.”

My soul pro-claims the great-ness of the Lord,

the Al-might-y has done great things for me,
and ho-ly is his Name.
He has mer-cy on those who fear him

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scat-tered the proud in their con-ceit.
He has cast down the might-y from their thrones,
and has lift-ed up the low-ly.

He has filled the hun-gry with good things,
and the rich he has sent a-way emp-ty.
He has come to the help of his serv-ant Is-ra-el,
for he has re-mem-bered his prom-ise of mer-cy,

A reading from Acts 9:19-31

For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus, and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “This man is the Son of God.” All who heard him were amazed and were saying, “Is this not the man who in Jerusalem was ravaging those who call on this name, and who had come here to bring them as prisoners to the chief priests?” But Saul became more and more capable, and was causing consternation among the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Christ.

Now after some days had passed, the Jews plotted together to kill him, but Saul learned of their plot against him. They were also watching the city gates day and night so that they could kill him. But his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall by lowering him in a basket.

When he arrived in Jerusalem, he attempted to associate with the disciples, and they were all afraid of him, because they did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took Saul, brought him to the apostles, and related to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, that the Lord had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken out boldly in the name of Jesus. So he was staying with them, associating openly with them in Jerusalem, speaking out boldly in the name of the Lord. He was speaking and debating with the Greek-speaking Jews, but they were trying to kill him. When the brothers found out about this, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him away to Tarsus.

Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria experienced peace and thus was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, the church increased in numbers.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness while it was day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
