Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord,
for he is good, and his loy-al love en-dures!

How bless-ed are those who pro-mote jus-tice,
and do what is right all the time!
Re-mem-ber me, O Lord,
when you show fa-vor to your peo-ple!

Pay at-ten-tion to me,
when you de-liv-er us,
so I may see the pros-per-i-ty of your cho-sen one,
and re-joice a-long with your na-tion,

and boast a-long with the peo-ple
the peo-ple who be-long to you.
We have sinned like our an-ces-tors;
we have done wrong, we have done e-vil.

Our an-ces-tors in E-gypt failed
to ap-pre-ci-ate your mi-rac-u-lous deeds,
they failed to re-mem-ber your man-y acts of loy-al love,
and they re-belled at the sea, by the Red Sea.

Yet he de-liv-ered them
for the sake of his rep-u-ta-tion,
that he might re-veal his pow-er.
He shout-ed at the Red Sea and it dried up;

he led them through the deep wat-er
as if it were a de-sert.
He de-liv-ered them from the pow-er
of the one who hat-ed them,

and res-cued them from the pow-er of the en-e-my.
The wat-er cov-ered their en-e-mies;
not e-ven one of them sur-vived.
They be-lieved his prom-ise;

They sang prais-es to him.
but they quick-ly for-got what he had done;
they did not wait for his in-struc-tions.
In the wil-der-ness they craved for meat;

They chal-lenged God in the waste-land.
He grant-ed their re-quest,
then struck them with a dis-ease.
In the camp they re-sent-ed Mo-ses,

and Aa-ron, the Lords ho-ly priest.
The earth opened up and swal-lowed Da-than;
it en-gulfed the group led by A-bir-am.
Fire burned their group; the flames scorched the wick-ed.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,

Readings

A reading from Judges 17:1-13

There was a man named Micah from the Ephraimite hill country. He said to his mother, “You know the eleven hundred pieces of silver which were stolen from you, about which I heard you pronounce a curse? Look here, I have the silver. I stole it, but now I am giving it back to you.” His mother said, “May the Lord reward you, my son!” When he gave back to his mother the eleven hundred pieces of silver, his mother said, “I solemnly dedicate this silver to the Lord. It will be for my son’s benefit. We will use it to make a carved image and a metal image.” When he gave the silver back to his mother, she took two hundred pieces of silver to a silversmith, who made them into a carved image and a metal image. She then put them in Micah’s house. Now this man Micah owned a shrine. He made an ephod and some personal idols and hired one of his sons to serve as a priest. In those days Israel had no king. Each man did what he considered to be right.

There was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah. He was a Levite who had been temporarily residing among the tribe of Judah. This man left the town of Bethlehem in Judah to find another place to live. He came to the Ephraimite hill country and made his way to Micah’s house. Micah said to him, “Where do you come from?” He replied, “I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah. I am looking for a new place to live.” Micah said to him, “Stay with me. Become my adviser and priest. I will give you ten pieces of silver per year, plus clothes and food.” So the Levite agreed to stay with the man; the young man was like a son to Micah. Micah paid the Levite; the young man became his priest and lived in Micah’s house. Micah said, “Now I know the Lord will make me rich, because I have this Levite as my priest.”

He has mer-cy on those who fear him

He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has scat-tered the proud in their con-ceit.

A reading from Acts 7:44-8:1


Our ancestors had the tabernacle of testimony in the wilderness, just as God who spoke to Moses ordered him to make it according to the design he had seen. Our ancestors received possession of it and brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our ancestors, until the time of David. He found favor with God and asked that he could find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob. But Solomon built a house for him. Yet the Most High does not live in houses made by human hands, as the prophet says,

‘Heaven is my throne,

and earth is the footstool for my feet.

What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord,

or what is my resting place?

Did my hand not make all these things?’

“You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did! Which of the prophets did your ancestors not persecute? They killed those who foretold long ago the coming of the Righteous One, whose betrayers and murderers you have now become! You received the law by decrees given by angels, but you did not obey it.”

When they heard these things, they became furious and ground their teeth at him. But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked intently toward heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. “Look!” he said. “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” But they covered their ears, shouting out with a loud voice, and rushed at him with one intent. When they had driven him out of the city, they began to stone him, and the witnesses laid their cloaks at the feet of a young man named Saul. They continued to stone Stephen while he prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” Then he fell to his knees and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he died. And Saul agreed completely with killing him.

Now on that day a great persecution began against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were forced to scatter throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria.
