Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176) An Evening Prayer
1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.
1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron
O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,we sing your praises, O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
You are worthy at all times
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

O Lord, the God who a-veng-es!
O God who a-veng-es, re-veal your splen-dor!
Rise up, O judge of the earth! Pay back the proud!
O Lord, how long will the wick-ed cel-e-brate?
They spew out threats and speak de-fi-ant-ly;
all the e-vil-do-ers boast.
O Lord, they crush your peo-ple;
they op-press the na-tion that be-longs to you.
They kill the wid-ow and the res-i-dent for-eign-er,
and they mur-der the fa-ther-less.
Then they say, The Lord does not see this;
the God of Ja-cob does not take no-tice of it.
Take no-tice of this, you ig-no-rant peo-ple!
You fools, when will you ev-er un-der-stand?
Does the one who makes the hu-man ear not hear?
Does the one who forms the hu-man eye not see?
Does the one who dis-ci-plines the na-tions not pun-ish?
He is the one who im-parts knowl-edge to hu-man be-ings!
The Lord knows that peo-ple's thoughts are mor-al-ly bank-rupt.
How bless-ed is the one whom you in-struct, O Lord,
the one whom you teach from your law,
in or-der to pro-tect him from times of trou-ble,
un-til the wick-ed are de-stroyed.
Cer-tain-ly the Lord does not for-sake his peo-ple;
He does not a-ban-don the na-tion that be-longs to him.
For jus-tice will pre-vail,
and all the mor-al-ly up-right will be vin-di-cat-ed.
Who will rise up to de-fend me a-gainst the wick-ed?
Who will stand up for me
a-gainst the e-vil-do-er?
If the Lord had not helped me,
I would soon have dwelt in the si-lence of death.
If I say, My foot is slip-ping,
your loy-al love, O Lord, sup-ports me.
When wor-ries threat-en to o-ver-whelm me,
your sooth-ing touch makes me hap-py.
Cruel rul-ers are not your al-lies,
those who make op-pres-sive laws.
They con-spire a-gainst the blame-less,
and con-demn to death the in-no-cent.
But the Lord will pro-tect me, and my God will shel-ter me.
He will pay them back for their sin.
He will de-stroy them be-cause of their e-vil.
the Lord our God will de-stroy them.
Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.
Readings
A reading from Acts 5:27-42
When they had brought them, they stood them before the council, and the high priest questioned them, saying, “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name. Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man’s blood on us!” But Peter and the apostles replied, “We must obey God rather than people. The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are witnesses of these events, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him.”
Now when they heard this, they became furious and wanted to execute them. But a Pharisee whose name was Gamaliel, a teacher of the law who was respected by all the people, stood up in the council and ordered the men to be put outside for a short time. Then he said to the council, “Men of Israel, pay close attention to what you are about to do to these men. For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men joined him. He was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and nothing came of it. After him Judas the Galilean arose in the days of the census, and incited people to follow him in revolt. He too was killed, and all who followed him were scattered. So in this case I say to you, stay away from these men and leave them alone, because if this plan or this undertaking originates with people, it will come to nothing, but if it is from God, you will not be able to stop them, or you may even be found fighting against God.” He convinced them, and they summoned the apostles and had them beaten. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus and released them. So they left the council rejoicing because they had been considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name. And every day both in the temple courts and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus was the Christ.
Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Splen-dor and ho-nor and king-ly pow-er
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-at-ed eve-ry-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-at-ed and have their be-ing;
And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fam-i-ly, lan-guage, peo-ple, and na-tion,
a king-dom of priests to serve our God.
And so, to him who sits up-on the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be wor-ship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for ev-er and for ev-er-more.
Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.
A reading from John 3:22-36
After this, Jesus and his disciples came into Judean territory, and there he spent time with them and was baptizing. John was also baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming to him and being baptized. (For John had not yet been thrown into prison.)
Now a dispute came about between some of John’s disciples and a certain Jew concerning ceremonial washing. So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River, about whom you testified – see, he is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to him!”
John replied, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but rather, ‘I have been sent before him.’ The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. This then is my joy, and it is complete. He must become more important while I become less important.”
The one who comes from above is superior to all. The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is superior to all. He testifies about what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. The one who has accepted his testimony has confirmed clearly that God is truthful. For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he does not give the Spirit sparingly. The Father loves the Son and has placed all things under his authority. The one who believes in the Son has eternal life. The one who rejects the Son will not see life, but God’s wrath remains on him.
Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

A-rise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glo-ry of the Lord has dawned up-on you.
For be-hold, dark-ness co-vers the land;
deep gloom en-shrouds the peo-ples.
But o-ver you the Lord will rise,
and his glo-ry will ap-pear up-on you.
Na-tions will stream to your light,
and kings to the bright-ness of your dawn-ing.
Your gates will al-ways be o-pen;
by day or night they will nev-er be shut.
They will call you, The Cit-y of the Lord,
The Zi-on of the Ho-ly One of Is-ra-el.
Vio-lence will no more be heard in your land,
ru-in or de-struc-tion with-in your bor-ders.
You will call your wall, Sal-va-tion,
and all your por-tals, Praise.
The sun will no more be your light by day;
by night you will not need the bright-ness of the moon.
The Lord will be your ev-er-last-ing light,
and your God will be your glo-ry.
Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.

was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.
