Evening Prayer - Thursday August 6, 2020

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 85

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O Lord, you showed fa-vor to your land;
you re-stored the well-be-ing of Ja-cob.
You par-doned the wrong-do-ing of your peo-ple;
you for-gave all their sin.

You with-drew all your fu-ry;
you turned back from your rag-ing an-ger.
Re-store us, O God our de-liv-er-er!
Do not be dis-pleased with us!

Will you stay mad at us for-ev-er?
Will you re-main an-gry through-out fu-ture gen-er-a-tions?
Will you not re-vive us once more?
Then your peo-ple will re-joice in you!

O Lord, show us your loy-al love!
Be-stow on us your de-liv-er-ance!
I will lis-ten to what God the Lord says.
For he will make peace with his peo-ple, his faith-ful fol-low-ers.

Yet they must not re-turn to their fool-ish ways.
Cer-tain-ly his loy-al fol-low-ers will soon ex-pe-ri-ence his de-liv-er-ance;
then his splen-dor will a-gain ap-pear in our land.
Loy-al love and faith-ful-ness meet;

De-liv-er-ance and peace greet each oth-er with kiss.
Faith-ful-ness grows from the ground,
and de-liv-er-ance looks down from the sky.
Yes, the Lord will be-stow his good bles-sing,

O Lord, show us your loy-al love!
And our land will yield its crops.
De-liv-er-ance goes be-fore him,
and pre-pares path-way for him.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Psalm 86

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Lis-ten O Lord! An-swer me!
For I am op-pressed and need-y.
Pro-tect me, for I am loy-al! You are my God;
de-liv-er your serv-ant who trusts in you!

Have mer-cy on me, Lord,
for I cry out to you all day long!
Make your serv-ant glad,
for to you, Lord, pray!

Cer-tain-ly O Lord, you are kind and for-giv-ing,
and show great faith-ful-ness to all who cry out to you.
O Lord, hear my prayer!
Pay at-ten-tion to my plea for mer-cy!

In my time of trou-ble I cry out to you,
for you will an-swer me.
None can com-pare to you a-mong the gods, Lord!
Your ex-ploits are in-com-pa-ra-ble!

All the na-tions, whom you cre-at-ed,
will come and wor-ship you, Lord.
They will ho-nor your name.
For you are great and do a-maz-ing things.

You a-lone are God.
O Lord, teach me how you want me to live!
Then I will o-bey your com-mands.
Make me whole-heart-ed-ly com-mit-ted to you!

O Lord, my God, I will give you thanks with my whole heart!
I will ho-nor your name con-tin-ual-ly!
For you will ex-tend your great loy-al love to me,
and will de-liv-er my life from the depths of She-ol.

O God, ar-ro-gant men at-tack me;
a gang of ruth-less men, who do not re-spect you, seek my life.
But you, O Lord, are a com-pas-sion-ate and mer-ci-ful God.
You are pa-tient and dem-on-strate great loy-al love and faith-ful-ness.

Turn toward me and have mer-cy on me!
Give your serv-ant your strength!
De-liv-er this child of your fe-male serv-ant!
Show me ev-i-dence of your fa-vor!

Then those who hate me will see it and be a-shamed,
for you, O Lord, will help me and com-fort me.
Make your serv-ant glad,
for to you, Lord, pray!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 4:1-12

While Peter and John were speaking to the people, the priests and the commander of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them, angry because they were teaching the people and announcing in Jesus the resurrection of the dead. So they seized them and put them in jail until the next day (for it was already evening). But many of those who had listened to the message believed, and the number of the men came to about five thousand.

On the next day, their rulers, elders, and experts in the law came together in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, Alexander, and others who were members of the high priest’s family. After making Peter and John stand in their midst, they began to inquire, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, replied, “Rulers of the people and elders, if we are being examined today for a good deed done to a sick man – by what means this man was healed – let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, this man stands before you healthy. This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, that has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among people by which we must be saved.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Moses

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I will sing to the Lord,
for he is loft-and up-lift-ed;
the horse and its rid-er
has he hurled into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my ref-uge;
the Lord has be-come my Sav-ior.
This is my God and I will praise him,
the God of my peo-ple and will ex-alt him.

The Lord is a might-y war-ri-or;
Yah-weh is his ho-ly Name.
The char-i-ots of Phar-oah and his ar-my
has he hurled into the sea;

The fin-est of those who bear ar-mor
have been drowned in the Red Sea.
The fa-thom-less deep has o-ver-whelmed them;
they sank into the depths like stone.

Your right hand, Lord,
is glo-ri-ous and might-y;
your right hand, Lord,
has o-ver-thrown the en-e-my.

Who can be com-pared with you,
Lord, a-mong the gods?
who is like you,
glo-ri-ous in ho-li-ness,

Awe-some in re-nown,
and work-er of won-ders?
You stretched forth your right hand;
the earth swal-lowed them up.

With your con-stant love
you led the peo-ple you re-deemed;
with your might you brought them in safe-ty
to your ho-ly dwell-ing place.

You will bring them in and plant them
on the mount of your pos-ses-sion,
In the rest-ing place
you have made for your-self, Lord,

In the sanc-tu-ar-y, Lord,
that your hand has es-tab-lished.
The Lord shall reign
for ev-er and for ev-er. A-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from John 1:43-51

On the next day Jesus wanted to set out for Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” (Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the town of Andrew and Peter.) Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law, and the prophets also wrote about – Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael replied, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip replied, “Come and see.”

Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and exclaimed, “Look, a true Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, “How do you know me?” Jesus replied, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel!” Jesus said to him, “Because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” He continued, “I tell all of you the solemn truth – you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Thursday - Evening Suffrages A

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Show us your mer-cy, Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your min-is-ters with right-eous-ness;
Let your peo-ple sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For on-ly in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion un-der your care;
And guide us in the way of jus-tice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health a-mong all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of the poor be tak-en a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.
Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Al-might-God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

LEVAS2 (L099) On Christ the solid rock

Piano    PARTS

1 My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.
2 When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In ev’ry high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil. [Refrain]
3 His oath, His covenant and blood,
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
he then is all my hope and stay. [Refrain]
4 When He shall come with trumpet sound,
O may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne. [Refrain]
