1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!

2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!

3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!

4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.

Then you spoke through a vi-sion

I have raised up a young man from the peo-ple.

With my ho-ly oil I have a-noint-ed him as king.
My hand will sup-port him,
and my arm will strength-en him.

and do not keep my com-mand-ment,

I will pun-ish their re-bel-lion
by beat-ing them with a club,
their sin by in-flict-ing them with bruis-es.
But I will not re-move my loy-al love from him.

I will not be un-faith-ful to my prom-ise.
I will not break my cov-e-nant
or go back on what I prom-ised.
Once and for all I have vowed by my own ho-li-ness,

I will nev-er de-ceive Da-vid.
His dy-nas-ty will last for-ev-er.
His throne will en-dure be-fore me, like the sun,
it will re-main sta-ble, like the moon,

his throne will en-dure like the sky.
But you have spurned and re-ject-ed him;
you are an-gry with your cho-sen king.
You have re-pu-di-at-ed your cov-e-nant with your serv-ant;

You have thrown his crown to the ground.
You have bro-ken down all his walls;
you have made his strong-holds a heap of ru-ins.
All who pass by have robbed him;

he has be-come an ob-ject of dis-dain to his neigh-bors.
You have al-lowed his ad-ver-sar-ies to be vic-to-ri-ous,
and all his en-e-mies to re-joice.
You turn back his sword from the ad-ver-sar-y,

and have not sus-tained him in bat-tle.
You have brought to an end his splen-dor,
and have knocked his throne to the ground.
You have cut short his youth,

You have cov-ered him with shame.
How long, O Lord, will this last?
Will you re-main hid-den for-ev-er?
Will your an-ger con-tin-ue to burn like fire?

Take note of my brief life span!
Why do you make all peo-ple so mor-tal?
No man can live on with-out ex-pe-ri-enc-ing death,
or de-liv-er his life from the pow-er of She-ol.

Where are your ear-li-er faith-ful deeds, O Lord,
the ones per-formed in ac-cord-ance with your re-li-a-ble oath to Da-vid?
Take note, O Lord, of the way your serv-ants are taunt-ed,
and of how I must bear so man-y in-sults from peo-ple!

Your en-e-mies, O Lord, hurl in-sult;
they in-sult your cho-sen king as they dog his foot-steps.
The Lord de-serves praise for-ev-er-more!
We a-gree! We a-gree! A-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,

Readings

A reading from Acts 5:12-26

Now many miraculous signs and wonders came about among the people through the hands of the apostles. By common consent they were all meeting together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high honor. More and more believers in the Lord were added to their number, crowds of both men and women. Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets, and put them on cots and pallets, so that when Peter came by at least his shadow would fall on some of them. A crowd of people from the towns around Jerusalem also came together, bringing the sick and those troubled by unclean spirits. They were all being healed.

Now the high priest rose up, and all those with him (that is, the religious party of the Sadducees ), and they were filled with jealousy. They laid hands on the apostles and put them in a public jail. But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, led them out, and said, “Go and stand in the temple courts and proclaim to the people all the words of this life.” When they heard this, they entered the temple courts at daybreak and began teaching.

Now when the high priest and those who were with him arrived, they summoned the Sanhedrin – that is, the whole high council of the Israelites – and sent to the jail to have the apostles brought before them. But the officers who came for them did not find them in the prison, so they returned and reported, “We found the jail locked securely and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside.” Now when the commander of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were greatly puzzled concerning it, wondering what this could be. But someone came and reported to them, “Look! The men you put in prison are standing in the temple courts and teaching the people!” Then the commander of the temple guard went with the officers and brought the apostles without the use of force (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people).

A reading from John 3:1-21

Now a certain man, a Pharisee named Nicodemus, who was a member of the Jewish ruling council, came to Jesus at night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs that you do unless God is with him.” Jesus replied, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born from above, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter his mother’s womb and be born a second time, can he?”

Jesus answered, “I tell you the solemn truth, unless a person is born of water and spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I said to you, ‘You must all be born from above.’ The wind blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Nicodemus replied, “How can these things be?” Jesus answered, “Are you the teacher of Israel and yet you don’t understand these things? I tell you the solemn truth, we speak about what we know and testify about what we have seen, but you people do not accept our testimony. If I have told you people about earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven – the Son of Man. Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.”

For this is the way God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world should be saved through him. The one who believes in him is not condemned. The one who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. Now this is the basis for judging: that the light has come into the world and people loved the darkness rather than the light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil deeds hates the light and does not come to the light, so that their deeds will not be exposed. But the one who practices the truth comes to the light, so that it may be plainly evident that his deeds have been done in God.
