and on the day of the full moon
when our fes-ti-val be-gins.

For ob-serv-ing the fes-ti-val
is a re-quire-ment for Is-ra-el;
it is an or-di-nance giv-en by the God of Ja-cob.
He de-creed it as a reg-u-la-tion in Jo-seph,

when he at-tacked the land of E-gypt.
I heard a voice I did not rec-og-nize.
It said: I re-moved the bur-den from his shoul-ders;
his hands were re-leased from hold-ing the bas-kets.

In your dis-tress
you called out and I res-cued you.
I an-swered you from a dark thun-der-cloud.
I test-ed you at the wat-ers of Mer-i-bah.

I said, Lis-ten, my peo-ple!
I will warn you! O Is-ra-el,
if on-ly you would o-bey me!
There must be no oth-er god a-mong you.

You must not wor-ship a for-eign god.
I am the Lord, your God,
I am the one who brought you
out of the land of E-gypt.

O-pen your mouth wide and I will fill it!
But my peo-ple did not o-bey me;
Is-ra-el did not sub-mit to me.
I gave them o-ver to their stub-born de-sire;

they did what seemed right to them.
If on-ly my peo-ple would o-bey me!
If on-ly Is-ra-el would keep my com-mands!
Then I would quick-ly sub-due their en-e-mies,

I would at-tack their ad-ver-sar-ies.
May those who hate the Lord
cow-er in fear be-fore him!
May they be per-ma-nent-ly hu-mil-i-at-ed!

I would feed Is-ra-el the best wheat,
and would sat-is-fy your ap-pe-tite
with hon-ey from the rock-y cliff.

Res-cue the poor and need-y!

A reading from Acts 3:12-26


When Peter saw this, he declared to the people, “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this? Why do you stare at us as if we had made this man walk by our own power or piety? The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate after he had decided to release him. But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a man who was a murderer be released to you. You killed the Originator of life, whom God raised from the dead. To this fact we are witnesses! And on the basis of faith in Jesus’ name, his very name has made this man – whom you see and know – strong. The faith that is through Jesus has given him this complete health in the presence of you all. And now, brothers, I know you acted in ignorance, as your rulers did too. But the things God foretold long ago through all the prophets – that his Christ would suffer – he has fulfilled in this way. Therefore repent and turn back so that your sins may be wiped out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord, and so that he may send the Messiah appointed for you – that is, Jesus. This one heaven must receive until the time all things are restored, which God declared from times long ago through his holy prophets. Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must obey him in everything he tells you. Every person who does not obey that prophet will be destroyed and thus removed from the people.’ And all the prophets, from Samuel and those who followed him, have spoken about and announced these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed.’ God raised up his servant and sent him first to you, to bless you by turning each one of you from your iniquities.”

Glo-ry to God in the high-est,
and peace to his peo-ple on earth.
Lord God, heav-en-ly King,
al-might-y God and Fath-er,

We wor-ship you, we give you thanks,
We praise you for your glo-ry.
Lord Je-sus Christ, on-ly Son of the Fath-er,
Lord God, O Lamb of God,

You take a-way the sin of the world:
now have mer-cy on us;
you are seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er:
now re-ceive our pray-er.

For you a-lone are the Ho-ly One,
You a-lone are the Lord,
You a-lone are the Most High, Je-sus Christ,
with the Ho-ly Spi-rit, in the glo-ry of God the Fath-er.


A reading from John 1:29-42



On the next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is the one about whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who is greater than I am, because he existed before me.’ I did not recognize him, but I came baptizing with water so that he could be revealed to Israel.”
Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him. And I did not recognize him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining – this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ I have both seen and testified that this man is the Chosen One of God.”
Again the next day John was standing there with two of his disciples. Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” When John’s two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. Jesus turned around and saw them following and said to them, “What do you want?” So they said to him, “Rabbi” (which is translated Teacher), “where are you staying?” Jesus answered, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. Now it was about four o’clock in the afternoon.
Andrew, the brother of Simon Peter, was one of the two disciples who heard what John said and followed Jesus. He first found his own brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” (which is translated Christ). Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon, the son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ.
