Why, Lord, do you stand far off?
Why do you pay no at-ten-tion
dur-ing times of trou-ble?
The wick-ed ar-ro-gant-ly chase the op-pressed;

the op-pressed are trapped
by the schemes the wick-ed have dreamed up.
Yes, the wick-ed man boasts
be-cause he gets what he wants;

the one who robs oth-ers
curs-es and re-jects the Lord.
The wick-ed man is so ar-ro-gant
he al-ways thinks, God won't hold me ac-count-a-ble;

He does not care.
He is se-cure at all times.
He has no re-gard for your com-mands;
he dis-dains all his en-e-mies.

He says to him-self,
I will nev-er be shak-en,
be-cause I ex-pe-ri-ence no ca-lam-i-ty.
His mouth is full of curs-es

and de-cep-tive, harm-ful words;
his tongue in-jures and de-stroys.
He waits in am-bush near the vil-lag-es;
in hid-den places he kills the in-no-cent.

His eyes look for some un-for-tu-nate vic-tim.
He lies in am-bush in a hid-den place,
like a li-on in a thick-et;
he lies in am-bush, wait-ing to catch the op-pressed;

He catch-es the op-pressed
by pull-ing in his net.
His vic-tims are crushed and beat-en down;
they are trapped in his stur-dy net.

He says to him-self, God o-ver-looks it;
he does not pay at-ten-tion;
he will nev-er no-tice.
Rise up, Lord! O God, strike him down!

Do not for-get the op-pressed!
Why does the wick-ed man re-ject God?
He says to him-self, You will not hold me ac-count-a-ble.
But you have tak-en no-tice,

For you al-ways see one
who in-flicts pain and suf-fer-ing.
The un-for-tu-nate vic-tim en-trusts his cause to you;
You de-liv-er the fath-er-less.

Break the arm of the wick-ed and e-vil man!
Hold him ac-count-a-ble for his wick-ed deeds,
which he thought you would not dis-cov-er.
The Lord rules for-ev-er!

The na-tions are driv-en out of his land.
Lord, you have heard the re-quest of the op-pressed;
you make them feel se-cure
be-cause you lis-ten to their prayer.

You de-fend the fath-er-less
and you care for the op-pressed,
so that these wick-ed mere mor-tals
may no long-er ter-ror-ize them.

In the Lord I have tak-en shel-ter.
How can you say to me,
Flee to a moun-tain like a bird!
For look, the wick-ed pre-pare their bows,

they put their ar-rows on the strings,
to shoot in the dark-ness at the mor-al-ly up-right.
When the foun-da-tions are de-stroyed,
what can the god-ly ac-com-plish?

The Lord is in his ho-ly tem-ple;
the Lords throne is in heav-en.
His eyes watch; his eyes ex-am-ine all peo-ple.
The Lord ap-proves of the god-ly,

but he hates the wick-ed
and those who love to do vio-lence.
May he rain down burn-ing coals
and brim-stone on the wick-ed!

A whirl-wind is what they de-serve!
Cer-tain-ly the Lord is just;
he re-wards god-ly deeds;
the up-right will ex-pe-ri-ence his fa-vor.

Readings

A reading from Acts 9:32-43

Now as Peter was traveling around from place to place, he also came down to the saints who lived in Lydda. He found there a man named Aeneas who had been confined to a mattress for eight years because he was paralyzed. Peter said to him, “Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Get up and make your own bed!” And immediately he got up. All those who lived in Lydda and Sharon saw him, and they turned to the Lord.

Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which in translation means Dorcas). She was continually doing good deeds and acts of charity. At that time she became sick and died. When they had washed her body, they placed it in an upstairs room. Because Lydda was near Joppa, when the disciples heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Come to us without delay.” So Peter got up and went with them, and when he arrived they brought him to the upper room. All the widows stood beside him, crying and showing him the tunics and other clothing Dorcas used to make while she was with them. But Peter sent them all outside, knelt down, and prayed. Turning to the body, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” Then she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her get up. Then he called the saints and widows and presented her alive. This became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed in the Lord. So Peter stayed many days in Joppa with a man named Simon, a tanner.

A reading from John 6:60-71


Then many of his disciples, when they heard these things, said, “This is a difficult saying! Who can understand it?” When Jesus was aware that his disciples were complaining about this, he said to them, “Does this cause you to be offended? Then what if you see the Son of Man ascending where he was before? The Spirit is the one who gives life; human nature is of no help! The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life. But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus had already known from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) So Jesus added, “Because of this I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has allowed him to come.”

After this many of his disciples quit following him and did not accompany him any longer. So Jesus said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God!” Jesus replied, “Didn’t I choose you, the twelve, and yet one of you is the devil?” (Now he said this about Judas son of Simon Iscariot, for Judas, one of the twelve, was going to betray him.)

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,

We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
