Thursday - Evensong Invitation

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in the beau-ty of his ho-li-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lift-ing up of my hands as the eve-ning sac-ri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teach-es me, night af-ter night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Thursday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ev-er-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, ho-ly and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to the set-ting of the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are wor-thy at all times
to be praised by hap-py voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giv-er of life,
and to be glo-ri-fied through all the world.

Psalms

Psalm 105:23-45

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Is-ra-el moved to E-gypt;
Ja-cob lived for a time in the land of Ham.
The Lord made his peo-ple ver-y fruit-ful,
and made them more nu-mer-ous than their en-e-mies.

He caused them to hate his peo-ple,
and to mis-treat his serv-ants.
He sent his serv-ant Mo-ses,
and Aa-ron, whom he had cho-sen.

They ex-e-cut-ed his mi-rac-u-lous signs a-mong them,
and his a-maz-ing deeds in the land of Ham.
He made it dark;
they did not dis-o-bey his or-ders.

He turned their wa-ter into blood,
and He killed all their fish.
Their land was o-ver-run by frogs,
which e-ven got into the rooms of their kings.

He or-dered flies to come;
gnats in-vad-ed their whole ter-ri-to-ry.
He sent hail a-long with the rain;
there was light-ning in their land.

He de-stroyed their vines and fig trees,
and broke the trees through-out their ter-ri-to-ry.
He or-dered lo-custs to come,
in-nu-mer-a-ble grass-hop-pers.

They ate all the veg-e-ta-tion in their land,
and de-voured the crops of their fields.
He struck down all the first-born in their land,
the first fruits of their re-pro-duc-tive pow-er.

He brought his peo-ple out
en-riched with sil-ver and gold;
none of his tribes stum-bled.
E-gypt was hap-py when they left,

For they were a-fraid of them.
He spread out a cloud for a cov-er,
and pro-vid-ed a fire to light up the night.
They asked for food, and he sent quail;

he sat-is-fied them with food from the sky.
He o-pened up a rock and wa-ter flowed out;
a riv-er ran through dry re-gions.
Yes, he re-mem-bered the sa-cred prom-ise

The prom-ise he made to A-bra-ham his serv-ant.
When he led his peo-ple out, they re-joiced;
his cho-sen ones shout-ed with joy.
He hand-ed the ter-ri-to-ry of na-tions o-ver to them,

and they took pos-ses-sion
of what oth-er peo-ples had pro-duced,
so that they might keep his com-mands and o-bey his laws.
Praise the Lord! Al-le-lu-ia! A-men

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Acts 6:15-7:16

All who were sitting in the council looked intently at Stephen and saw his face was like the face of an angel.

Then the high priest said, “Are these things true?” So he replied, “Brothers and fathers, listen to me. The God of glory appeared to our forefather Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he settled in Haran, and said to him, ‘Go out from your country and from your relatives, and come to the land I will show you.’ Then he went out from the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God made him move to this country where you now live. He did not give any of it to him for an inheritance, not even a foot of ground, yet God promised to give it to him as his possession, and to his descendants after him, even though Abraham as yet had no child. But God spoke as follows: ‘Your descendants will be foreigners in a foreign country, whose citizens will enslave them and mistreat them for four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves,’ said God, ‘and after these things they will come out of there and worship me in this place.’ Then God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and so he became the father of Isaac and circumcised him when he was eight days old, and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. The patriarchs, because they were jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt. But God was with him, and rescued him from all his troubles, and granted him favor and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who made him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. Then a famine occurred throughout Egypt and Canaan, causing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food. So when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent our ancestors there the first time. On their second visit Joseph made himself known to his brothers again, and Joseph’s family became known to Pharaoh. So Joseph sent a message and invited his father Jacob and all his relatives to come, seventy-five people in all. So Jacob went down to Egypt and died there, along with our ancestors, and their bones were later moved to Shechem and placed in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a certain sum of money from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Moses

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I will sing to the Lord,
for he is loft-y and up-lift-ed;
the horse and its rid-er
has he hurled into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my ref-uge;
the Lord has be-come my Sav-ior.
This is my God and I will praise him,
the God of my peo-ple and I will ex-alt him.

The Lord is a might-y war-ri-or;
Yah-weh is his ho-ly Name.
The char-i-ots of Phar-oah and his ar-my
has he hurled into the sea;

The fin-est of those who bear ar-mor
have been drowned in the Red Sea.
The fa-thom-less deep has o-ver-whelmed them;
they sank into the depths like a stone.

Your right hand, O Lord,
is glo-ri-ous and might-y;
your right hand, O Lord,
has o-ver-thrown the en-e-my.

Who can be com-pared with you,
O Lord, a-mong the gods?
who is like you,
glo-ri-ous in ho-li-ness,

Awe-some in re-nown,
and work-er of won-ders?
You stretched forth your right hand;
the earth swal-lowed them up.

With your con-stant love
you led the peo-ple you re-deemed;
with your might you brought them in safe-ty
to your ho-ly dwell-ing place.

You will bring them in and plant them
on the mount of your pos-ses-sion,
In the rest-ing place
you have made for your-self, O Lord,

In the sanc-tu-ar-y, O Lord,
that your hand has es-tab-lished.
The Lord shall reign
for ev-er and for ev-er. A-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from John 4:27-42

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. They were shocked because he was speaking with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?” or “Why are you speaking with her?” Then the woman left her water jar, went off into the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Surely he can’t be the Messiah, can he?” So they left the town and began coming to him.

Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, “Rabbi, eat something.” But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” So the disciples began to say to one another, “No one brought him anything to eat, did they?” Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me and to complete his work. Don’t you say, ‘There are four more months and then comes the harvest?’ I tell you, look up and see that the fields are already white for harvest! The one who reaps receives pay and gathers fruit for eternal life, so that the one who sows and the one who reaps can rejoice together. For in this instance the saying is true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap what you did not work for; others have labored and you have entered into their labor.”

Now many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the report of the woman who testified, “He told me everything I ever did.” So when the Samaritans came to him, they began asking him to stay with them. He stayed there two days, and because of his word many more believed. They said to the woman, “No longer do we believe because of your words, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this one really is the Savior of the world.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Glo-ry to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are wor-thy of praise; glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you for the ra-di-ance of your ho-ly Name;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you in the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, seat-ed be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Thursday - Evening Suffrages B

That this eve-ning may be ho-ly, good, and peace-ful,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That your ho-ly an-gels may lead us in paths of peace and good-will,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be par-doned and for-giv-en for our sins and of-fenses,
We en-treat you, O Lord.
That there may be peace to your Church and to the whole world,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may de-part this life in your faith and fear,
and be freed from con-dem-na-tion
be-fore the great judg-ment seat of Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

That we may be bound to-geth-er by your Ho-ly Spi-rit
in the com-mun-ion of Bar-na-bas and all your saints,
en-trust-ing one an-oth-er and all our life to Christ,
We en-treat you, O Lord.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.
