Give thanks to the Lord with the harp!

Sing to him a new song!
Play skill-ful-ly as you shout out your prais-es to him!
For the Lord's de-crees are just,
and eve-ry-thing he does is fair.

He pro-motes eq-ui-ty and jus-tice;
the Lord's faith-ful-ness ex-tends through-out the earth.
By the Lord's de-cree the heav-ens were made;
and by the breath of his mouth all the star-ry host.

He piles up the wat-er of the sea;
he puts the o-ceans in store-hous-es.
Let the whole earth fear the Lord!
Let all who live in the world stand in awe of him!

For he spoke, and it came into ex-ist-ence,
he is-sued the de-cree, and it stood firm.
The Lord frus-trates the de-ci-sions of the na-tion;
he nul-li-fies the plans of the peo-ples.

The Lord's de-ci-sions stand for-ev-er;
his plans a-bide through-out the ag-es.
How bless-ed is the na-tion whose God is the Lord,
the peo-ple whom he has cho-sen to be his spe-cial pos-ses-sion.

The Lord watch-es from heav-en;
and he sees all peo-ples.
From the place where he lives
he looks care-ful-ly at all the earth's in-hab-it-ants.

He is the one who forms eve-ry hu-man heart,
and takes note of all their ac-tions.
No king is de-liv-ered by his vast ar-my;
a war-ri-or is not saved by his great might.

A horse dis-ap-points those who trust in it for vic-to-ry;
de-spite its great strength, it can-not de-liv-er.
Look, the Lord takes no-tice of his loy-al fol-low-ers,
those who wait for him to dem-on-strate his faith-ful-ness

By sav-ing their lives from death
and sus-tain-ing them dur-ing times of fam-ine.
We wait for the Lord;
he is our de-liv-er-er and shield.

For our hearts re-joice in him,
for we trust in his ho-ly name.
May we ex-pe-ri-ence your faith-ful-ness, O Lord,
for we wait up-on you.

A reading from Acts 7:30-43

“After forty years had passed, an angel appeared to him in the desert of Mount Sinai, in the flame of a burning bush. When Moses saw it, he was amazed at the sight, and when he approached to investigate, there came the voice of the Lord, ‘I am the God of your forefathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ Moses began to tremble and did not dare to look more closely. But the Lord said to him, ‘Take the sandals off your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. I have certainly seen the suffering of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Now come, I will send you to Egypt.’ This same Moses they had rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and judge?’ God sent as both ruler and deliverer through the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush. This man led them out, performing wonders and miraculous signs in the land of Egypt, at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years. This is the Moses who said to the Israelites, ‘God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.’ This is the man who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our ancestors, and he received living oracles to give to you. Our ancestors were unwilling to obey him, but pushed him aside and turned back to Egypt in their hearts, saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will go in front of us, for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt – we do not know what has happened to him!’ At that time they made an idol in the form of a calf, brought a sacrifice to the idol, and began rejoicing in the works of their hands. But God turned away from them and gave them over to worship the host of heaven, as it is written in the book of the prophets: ‘It was not to me that you offered slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, was it, house of Israel? But you took along the tabernacle of Moloch and the star of the god Rephan, the images you made to worship, but I will deport you beyond Babylon.’

Sure-ly, it is God who saves me;

Give thanks to the Lord and call up-on his Name;

A reading from John 4:1-18

Now when Jesus knew that the Pharisees had heard that he was winning and baptizing more disciples than John (although Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples were), he left Judea and set out once more for Galilee.

But he had to pass through Samaria. Now he came to a Samaritan town called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there, so Jesus, since he was tired from the journey, sat right down beside the well. It was about noon.

A Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me some water to drink.” (For his disciples had gone off into the town to buy supplies. ) So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you – a Jew – ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water to drink?” (For Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.)

Jesus answered her, “If you had known the gift of God and who it is who said to you, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” “Sir,” the woman said to him, “you have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do you get this living water? Surely you’re not greater than our ancestor Jacob, are you? For he gave us this well and drank from it himself, along with his sons and his livestock.”

Jesus replied, “Everyone who drinks some of this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks some of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again, but the water that I will give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up to eternal life.” The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” He said to her, “Go call your husband and come back here.” The woman replied, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “Right you are when you said, ‘I have no husband,’ for you have had five husbands, and the man you are living with now is not your husband. This you said truthfully!”

Collect of the Day
