Tell the na-tions what he has done!

For the one who takes re-venge a-gainst mur-der-ers
took no-tice of the op-pressed;
he did not o-ver-look their cry for help
when they prayed: Have mer-cy on me, Lord!

See how I am op-pressed
by all those who hate me,
You who can snatch me
a-way from the gates of death!

Then I will tell a-bout all your praise-wor-thy acts;
in the gates of Daugh-ter Zi-on
I will re-joice
be-cause of your de-liv-er-ance.

The na-tions fell into the pit they had made;
their feet were caught in the net they had hid-den.
The Lord re-vealed him-self;
He ac-com-plished jus-tice;

The wick-ed were en-snared by their own ac-tion.
The wick-ed are turned back and sent to She-ol;
this is the des-ti-ny
of all the na-tions that ig-nore God,

For the need-y
are not per-ma-nent-ly ig-nored,
the hopes of the op-pressed
are not for-ev-er dashed.

Rise up, Lord! Don't let men be de-fi-ant!
May the na-tions be judged in your pres-ence!

Lord, who may be a guest in your home?
Who may live on your ho-ly hill?
Who-ev-er lives a blame-less life,
does what is right, and speaks hon-est-ly.

He does not slan-der,

He de-spis-es a rep-ro-bate,
but hon-ors the Lord's loy-al fol-low-ers.

He makes firm com-mit-ments
and does not re-nege on his prom-ise.
He does not charge inter-est
when he lends his mon-ey.

He does not take bribes
to tes-ti-fy a-gainst the in-no-cent.
The one who lives like this
will nev-er be shak-en.

Readings

A reading from Acts 11:19-30

Now those who had been scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message to no one but Jews. But there were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene among them who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks too, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus. The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord. A report about them came to the attention of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with devoted hearts, because he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and a significant number of people were brought to the Lord. Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught a significant number of people. Now it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.

At that time some prophets came down from Jerusalem to Antioch. One of them, named Agabus, got up and predicted by the Spirit that a severe famine was about to come over the whole inhabited world. (This took place during the reign of Claudius.) So the disciples, each in accordance with his financial ability, decided to send relief to the brothers living in Judea. They did so, sending their financial aid to the elders by Barnabas and Saul.

A reading from John 8:21-32

Then Jesus said to them again, “I am going away, and you will look for me but will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come.” So the Jewish leaders began to say, “Perhaps he is going to kill himself, because he says, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’” Jesus replied, “You people are from below; I am from above. You people are from this world; I am not from this world. Thus I told you that you will die in your sins. For unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”

So they said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus replied, “What I have told you from the beginning. I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the Father who sent me is truthful, and the things I have heard from him I speak to the world.” (They did not understand that he was telling them about his Father.)

Then Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing on my own initiative, but I speak just what the Father taught me. And the one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do those things that please him.” While he was saying these things, many people believed in him.

Then Jesus said to those Judeans who had believed him, “If you continue to follow my teaching, you are really my disciples and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Collect of the Day
