Evening Prayer - Tuesday July 14 2020

Monday after Proper 10

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 36

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

An e-vil man is re-bel-lious to the core,
and He does not fear God,
for he is too proud
to rec-og-nize and give up his sin.

The words he speaks are sin-ful and de-ceit-ful;
he does not care a-bout do-ing what is wise and right.
He plans ways to sin while he lies in bed;
he is com-mit-ted to sin-ful life-style;

he does not re-ject what is e-vil.
O Lord, your loy-al love reach-es to the sky;
your faith-ful-ness to the clouds.
Your jus-tice is like the high-est moun-tains,

Your fair-ness is like the deep-est sea;
you, Lord, pre-serve man-kind and the an-i-mal king-dom.
How pre-cious is your loy-al love, God!
The hu-man race finds shel-ter un-der your wings.

They are filled with food from your house,
and you al-low them to drink from the riv-er of your del-i-ca-cy.
For with you is the foun-tain of life;
in your light we see light.

Ex-tend your loy-al love to your faith-ful fol-low-ers,
and vin-di-cate the mor-al-ly up-right!
Do not let ar-ro-gant men o-ver-take me,
or let e-vil men make me home-less!

They have fall-en!
I can see the e-vil-do-er!
They have been knocked down
and are un-a-ble to get up!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Psalm 39

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I de-cid-ed, I will watch what say
and make sure I do not sin with my tongue.
I will put a muz-zle o-ver my mouth
while in the pres-ence of an e-vil man.

I was stone si-lent;
I held back the urge to speak.
My frus-tra-tion grew;
my anx-i-e-ty in-ten-si-fied.

As I thought a-bout it, I be-came im-pa-tient.
Fi-nal-ly spoke these words:
O Lord, help me un-der-stand my mor-tal-i-ty
and the brev-i-ty of life!

Let me real-lize how quick-ly my life will pass!
Look, you make my days short-lived,
and my life span is noth-ing
In your per-spec-tive, mere mo-ments.

Sure-ly all peo-ple,
e-ven those who seem se-cure,
are noth-ing but va-por.
Sure-ly peo-ple go through life as mere ghosts.

Sure-ly they ac-cu-mu-late worth-less wealth
with-out know-ing who will e-ven-tual-ly haul it a-way.
But now, O Lord, up-on what am I re-ly-ing?
You are my on-ly hope!

De-liv-er me from all my sins of re-bel-lion!
Do not make me the ob-ject of fools' in-sults!
I am si-lent and can-not o-pen my mouth
be-cause of what you have done.

Please stop wound-ing me!
You have al-most] beat-en me to death!
You se-vere-ly dis-ci-pline peo-ple for their sins;
like a moth you slow-ly de-vour their strength.

Sure-ly all peo-ple are a mere va-por.
So hear my prayer, Lord!
Lis-ten to my cry for help!
Do not ig-nore my sob-bing!

For I am a for-eign res-i-dent with you,
a tem-po-rar-y set-tler, just as all my an-ces-tors were.
Turn your an-gry gaze a-way from me,
so I can be hap-py be-fore pass a-way.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Matthew 25:14-30

“For it is like a man going on a journey, who summoned his slaves and entrusted his property to them. To one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey. The one who had received five talents went off right away and put his money to work and gained five more. In the same way, the one who had two gained two more. But the one who had received one talent went out and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money in it.

"After a long time, the master of those slaves came and settled his accounts with them. The one who had received the five talents came and brought five more, saying, ‘Sir, you entrusted me with five talents. See, I have gained five more. ’ His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful in a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master. ’

"The one with the two talents also came and said, ‘Sir, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more. ’ His master answered, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave! You have been faithful with a few things. I will put you in charge of many things. Enter into the joy of your master. ’

"Then the one who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Sir, I knew that you were a hard man, harvesting where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed, so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours. ’

"But his master answered, ‘Evil and lazy slave! So you knew that I harvest where I didn’t sow and gather where I didn’t scatter? Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return, I would have received my money back with interest! Therefore take the talent from him and give it to the one who has ten. For the one who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough. But the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken from him. And throw that worthless slave into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. ’

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Tuesday - Song of the Redeemed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O rul-er of the u-ni-verse, Lord God,
great deeds are they that you have done,
sur-pas-sing hu-man un-der-stand-ing.
Your ways are ways of right-eous-ness and truth,

O King of all the ages.
Who can fail to do you hom-age, Lord,
and sing the prais-es of your Name?
for you on-ly are the Ho-ly One.

All na-tions will draw near
and fall down be-fore you,
be-cause your just and ho-ly works
have been re-vealed. Al-le-lu-ia, a-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Tuesday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Tuesday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Tuesday - Evening Suffrages A

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your min-is-ters with right-eous-ness;
Let your peo-ple sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For on-ly in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion un-der your care;
And guide us in the way of jus-tice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health a-mong all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of the poor be tak-en a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ in his earthly life shared our toil and hallowed our labor: Be present with your people where they work; make those who carry on the industries and commerce of this land responsive to your will; and give to us all a pride in what we do, and a just return for our labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Amen.

A Collect for Aid against Perils

Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Savior Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Many are weary and sad;

Out of my life Let Jesus shine;
Make me a blessing O Savior I pray
Make me a blessing to someone today

Tell of His power to forgive
Others will trust Him if only you prove
True every moment you live [Refrain]

Be to the helpless a helper indeed
Unto your mission be true [Refrain]
