Evening Prayer - Thursday July 23 2020

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious Light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 66

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Shout out praise to God, all the earth!
Sing prais-es a-bout the maj-es-ty of his rep-u-ta-tion!
Give him the hon-or he de-serves!
Say to God: How awe-some are your deeds!

Be-cause of your great pow-er
your en-e-mies cow-er in fear be-fore you.
All the earth wor-ships you and sings prais-es to you!
They sing prais-es to your name!

Come and wit-ness God's ex-ploits!
His acts on be-half of peo-ple are awe-some!
He turned the sea into dry land;
they passed through the riv-er on foot.

Let us re-joice in him there!
He rules by his pow-er for-ev-er;
he watch-es the na-tions.
Stub-born re-bels should not ex-alt them-selves.

Praise our God, you na-tions!
Loud-ly pro-claim his praise!
He pre-serves our lives
and does not al-low our feet to slip.

For you, O God, test-ed us;
you puri-fied us like re-fined sil-ver.
You led us into trap;
you caused us to suf-fer.

You al-lowed men to ride o-ver our heads;
we passed through fire and wat-er,
but you brought us out
into wide o-pen place.

I will en-ter your tem-ple with burnt sac-ri-fic-es;
I will ful-fill the vows made to you,
which my lips ut-tered and my mouth spoke
when was in trou-ble.

I will of-fer up to you fat-tened an-i-mals as burnt sac-ri-fic-es,
a-long with the smell of sac-ri-fi-cial rams.
I will of-fer cat-tle and goats.
Come! List-en, all you who are loy-al to God!

I will de-clare what he has done for me.
I cried out to him for help
and praised him with my tongue.
If I had har-bored sin in my heart,

the Lord would not have list-ened.
How-ev-er, God heard; he list-ened to my prayer.
God de-serves praise,
for he did not re-ject my prayer or a-ban-don his love for me!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Psalm 67

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

May God show us his fa-vor and bless us!
May he smile up-on us!
Then those liv-ing on earth will know what you are like;
all na-tions will know how you de-liv-er your peo-ple.

Let the na-tions thank you, God!
Let all the na-tions thank you!
Let for-eign-ers re-joice and cel-e-brate!
For you ex-e-cute jus-tice a-mong the na-tions,

and gov-ern the peo-ple liv-ing on earth.
Let the na-tions thank you, God!
Let all the na-tions thank you!
For the earth yields its crops.

May God bless us!
May God, our God, bless us!
Then all the ends of the earth
will give him the hon-or he de-serves.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Romans 15:1-13

But we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not just please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good to build him up. For even Christ did not please himself, but just as it is written, “The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.”

For everything that was written in former times was written for our instruction, so that through endurance and through encouragement of the scriptures we may have hope. Now may the God of endurance and comfort give you unity with one another in accordance with Christ Jesus, so that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Receive one another, then, just as Christ also received you, to God’s glory. For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised on behalf of God’s truth to confirm the promises made to the fathers, and thus the Gentiles glorify God for his mercy.

As it is written, “Because of this I will confess you among the Gentiles, and I will sing praises to your name.” And again it says: “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with his people.” And again, “Praise the Lord all you Gentiles, and let all the peoples praise him.” And again Isaiah says, “The root of Jesse will come, and the one who rises to rule over the Gentiles, in him will the Gentiles hope.”

Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in him, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Thursday - Song of Moses

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

I will sing to the Lord,
for he is loft-and up-lift-ed;
the horse and its rid-er
has he hurled into the sea.

The Lord is my strength and my ref-uge;
the Lord has be-come my Sav-ior.
This is my God and I will praise him,
the God of my peo-ple and will ex-alt him.

The Lord is a might-y war-ri-or;
Yah-weh is his ho-ly Name.
The char-i-ots of Phar-oah and his ar-my
has he hurled into the sea;

The fin-est of those who bear ar-mor
have been drowned in the Red Sea.
The fa-thom-less deep has o-ver-whelmed them;
they sank into the depths like stone.

Your right hand, Lord,
is glo-ri-ous and might-y;
your right hand, Lord,
has o-ver-thrown the en-e-my.

Who can be com-pared with you,
Lord, a-mong the gods?
who is like you,
glo-ri-ous in ho-li-ness,

Awe-some in re-nown,
and work-er of won-ders?
You stretched forth your right hand;
the earth swal-lowed them up.

With your con-stant love
you led the peo-ple you re-deemed;
with your might you brought them in safe-ty
to your ho-ly dwell-ing place.

You will bring them in and plant them
on the mount of your pos-ses-sion,
In the rest-ing place
you have made for your-self, Lord,

In the sanc-tu-ar-y, Lord,
that your hand has es-tab-lished.
The Lord shall reign
for ev-er and for ev-er. A-men!

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from Matthew 26:69-75

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A slave girl came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” But he denied it in front of them all: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” When he went out to the gateway, another slave girl saw him and said to the people there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.” He denied it again with an oath, “I do not know the man!” After a little while, those standing there came up to Peter and said, “You really are one of them too – even your accent gives you away!”

At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment a rooster crowed. Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Glo-ry to you, Lord God of our fath-ers;
you are wor-thy of praise; glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you for the ra-di-ance of your ho-ly Name;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you in the splen-dor of your tem-ple;
on the throne of your maj-es-ty, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, seat-ed be-tween the Cher-u-bim;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Glo-ry to you, be-hold-ing the depths;
in the high vault of heav-en, glo-ry to you.
Glo-ry to you, Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit;
we will praise you and high-ly ex-alt you for ev-er.

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

be with us all ev-er-more. A-men.

with all joy and peace in be-liev-ing
through the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit. A-men.

Hymnal 1982 - Hymn 400 All Creatures of Our God and King

Piano    Parts    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass

3 Swift flowing water, pure and clear,
make music for your Lord to hear,
Alleluia, alleluia!
Fire, so intense and fiercely bright,
you give to us both warmth and light,
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

4 Dear mother earth, you day by day
unfold your blessings on our way;
O praise him, Alleluia!
All flowers and fruits that in you grow,
let them his glory also show:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

5 All you with mercy in your heart,
forgiving others, take your part,
O sing now: Alleluia!
All you that pain and sorrow bear,
praise God, and cast on him your care:
O praise him, O praise him,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
