Evening Prayer - Thursday July 16 2020

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, Amen.

The Invitatory and Psalter

V: O God, make speed | to save | us.
R: O Lord, | make haste | to help | us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

O Gracious Light Phos hilaron

O gracious light,
pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,
we sing your praises, O God:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
You are worthy at all times
to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

Psalm 37:19-42

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

They will not be a-shamed when hard times come;
when fam-ine comes they will have e-nough to eat.
But e-vil men will die;
the Lords en-e-mies will be in-cin-er-at-ed

they will go up in smoke.
E-vil men bor-row, but do not re-pay their debt,
but the god-ly show com-pas-sion and are gen-er-ous.
Sure-ly those fa-vored by the Lord will pos-sess the land,

but those rejected by him will be wiped out.
The Lord grants suc-cess to the one he finds com-mend-a-ble.
E-ven if he trip, he will not fall head-long,
for the Lord holds his hand.

I was once young, now am old.
I have nev-er seen a god-ly man a-ban-doned,
or his chil-dren forced to search for food.
All day long he shows com-pas-sion and lends to oth-ers,

and his chil-dren are bless-ed.
Turn a-way from e-vil! Do what is right!
Then you will en-joy last-ing se-cu-ri-ty.
For the Lord pro-motes jus-tice,

and nev-er a-ban-dons his faith-ful fol-low-ers.
They are per-ma-nent-ly se-cure,
but the chil-dren of e-vil men are wiped out.
The god-ly will pos-sess the land

and will dwell in it per-ma-nent-ly.
The god-ly speak wise words
and pro-mote jus-tice.
The law of their God con-trols their think-ing;

Their feet do not slip.
E-vil men set an am-bush for the god-ly
and try to kill them.
But the Lord does not sur-ren-der the god-ly,

Nor al-low them to be condemned in a court of law.
Re-ly on the Lord! O-bey his com-mand!
Then he will per-mit you to pos-sess the land;
you will see the de-mise of e-vil men.

I have seen ruth-less e-vil men grow-ing in in-flu-ence,
like a green tree grows in its na-tive soil.
But then one passes by,
and sud-den-ly they have dis-ap-peared!

looked for them,
but they could not be found.
Ob-serve the up-right!
Take note of the one who has in-teg-ri-ty!

For the one who pro-motes peace has fu-ture.
Sin-ful re-bels are to-tal-ly de-stroyed;
e-vil men have no fu-ture.
But the Lord de-liv-ers the god-ly;

he pro-tects them in times of trou-ble.
The Lord helps them and res-cues them;
he res-cues them from e-vil men and de-liv-ers them,
for they seek his pro-tec-tion.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Matthew 26:1-16

When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he told his disciples, “You know that after two days the Passover is coming, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified. ” Then the chief priests and the elders of the people met together in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas. They planned to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. But they said, “Not during the feast, so that there won’t be a riot among the people. ”

Now while Jesus was in Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of expensive perfumed oil, and she poured it on his head as he was at the table. When the disciples saw this, they became indignant and said, “Why this waste? It could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor!” When Jesus learned of this, he said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a good service for me. For you will always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me! When she poured this oil on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. I tell you the truth, wherever this gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will also be told in memory of her. ”

Then one of the twelve, the one named Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests and said, “What will you give me to betray him into your hands?” So they set out thirty silver coins for him. From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray him.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Glo-ry to God in the high-est,
and peace to his peo-ple on earth.
Lord God, heav-en-ly King,
al-might-God and Fath-er,

We wor-ship you, we give you thanks,
We praise you for your glo-ry.
Lord Je-sus Christ, on-ly Son of the Fath-er,
Lord God, Lamb of God,

You take a-way the sin of the world:
now have mer-cy on us;
you are seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er:
now re-ceive our pray-er.

For you a-lone are the Ho-ly One,
You a-lone are the Lord,
You a-lone are the Most High, Je-sus Christ,

Prayers

Thursday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Thursday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Thursday - Evening Suffrages A

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Show us your mer-cy, Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your min-is-ters with right-eous-ness;
Let your peo-ple sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For on-ly in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion un-der your care;
And guide us in the way of jus-tice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health a-mong all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of the poor be tak-en a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

Almighty God, whose blessed Son our Savior Jesus Christ ascended far above all heavens that he might fill all things: Mercifully give us faith to perceive that, according to his promise, he abides with his Church on earth, even to the end of the ages; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Guidance

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Al-might-God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

1. Out in the highways and byways of life
Many are weary and sad;
Carry the sunshine where the darkness is rife
Making the sorrowing glad

[Refrain]
Make me a blessing, Make me a blessing
Out of my life Let Jesus shine;
Make me a blessing O Savior I pray
Make me a blessing to someone today

2. Tell the sweet story of Christ and His love
Tell of His power to forgive
Others will trust Him if only you prove
True every moment you live [Refrain]

3. Give as 'twas given to you in your need
Love as the Master loved you
Be to the helpless a helper indeed
Unto your mission be true [Refrain]
