Friday - Evensong Invitation

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther
and from the Lord Je-sus Christ.
Wor-ship the Lord in the beau-ty of his ho-li-ness;
let the whole earth trem-ble be-fore him.

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as in-cense,
the lift-ing up of my hands as the eve-ning sac-ri-fice.
I will bless the Lord who gives me coun-sel;
my heart teach-es me, night af-ter night.

I have set the Lord al-ways be-fore me;
be-cause he is at my right hand, I shall not fall.
O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Friday - O Gracious Light

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

O gra-cious light, pure bright-ness
of the ev-er-liv-ing Fath-er in heav-en,
O Je-sus Christ, ho-ly and bless-ed!
we sing your prais-es, O God!

Now as we come to the set-ting of the sun,
and our eyes be-hold the ves-per light,
we sing your prais-es, O God:
Fath-er, Son, and Ho-ly Spi-rit.

You are wor-thy at all times
to be praised by hap-py voic-es,
O Son of God, O Giv-er of life,
and to be glo-ri-fied through all the world.

Psalms

Psalm 51

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Have mer-cy on me, O God,
be-cause of your loy-al love!
Be-cause of your great com-pas-sion,
wipe a-way my re-bel-lious acts!

Wash a-way my wrong-do-ing!
Cleanse me of all my sins!
For I am a-ware of my re-bel-lious acts;
I am for-ev-er con-scious of my sin.

A-gainst you, you a-bove all, I have sinned;
I have done what is e-vil in your sight.
So you are just when you con-front me;
you are right when you con-demn me.

Look, I was guilt-y of sin from birth,
a sin-ner the mo-ment my moth-er con-ceived me.
Look, you de-sire in-teg-ri-ty in the in-ner man;
you want me to pos-sess wis-dom.

Cleanse me with hys-sop and I will be pure;
wash me and I will be whit-er than snow.
Grant me the ul-ti-mate joy of be-ing for-giv-en!
May the bones you crushed re-joice!

Hide your face from my sins!
Wipe a-way all my guilt!
Cre-ate for me a pure heart, O God!
Re-new a right spi-rit with-in me!

Do not re-ject me!
Do not take your ho-ly Spi-rit a-way from me!
Let me a-gain ex-pe-ri-ence the joy of your de-liv-er-ance!
Sus-tain me by giv-ing me the de-sire to o-bey!

Then I will teach re-bels your mer-ci-ful ways,
and sin-ners will turn to you.
Res-cue me from the guilt of mur-der, O God,
the God who de-liv-ers me!

Then my tongue will shout for joy
be-cause of your right-eous-ness.
O Lord, give me the words!
Then my mouth will praise you.

Cer-tain-ly you do not want a sac-ri-fice,
or else I would of-fer it;
you do not de-sire a burnt sac-ri-fice.
The sac-ri-fic-es God de-sires are a hum-ble spi-rit O God,

a hum-ble and re-pent-ant heart you will not re-ject.
Be-cause you fa-vor Zi-on, do what is good for her!
Cre-ate for me a pure heart, O God!
Re-new a right spi-rit with-in me!

For-ti-fy the walls of Je-ru-sa-lem!
Then you will ac-cept the prop-er sac-ri-fice,
burnt sac-ri-fic-es and whole of-fer-ings;
then bulls will be sac-ri-ficed on your al-tar.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Readings

A reading from Romans 15:14-24

But I myself am fully convinced about you, my brothers and sisters, that you yourselves are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, and able to instruct one another. But I have written more boldly to you on some points so as to remind you, because of the grace given to me by God to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles. I serve the gospel of God like a priest, so that the Gentiles may become an acceptable offering, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

So I boast in Christ Jesus about the things that pertain to God. For I will not dare to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in order to bring about the obedience of the Gentiles, by word and deed, in the power of signs and wonders, in the power of the Spirit of God. So from Jerusalem even as far as Illyricum I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. And in this way I desire to preach where Christ has not been named, so as not to build on another person’s foundation, but as it is written: “Those who were not told about him will see, and those who have not heard will understand.”

This is the reason I was often hindered from coming to you. But now there is nothing more to keep me in these regions, and I have for many years desired to come to you when I go to Spain. For I hope to visit you when I pass through and that you will help me on my journey there, after I have enjoyed your company for a while.

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song of Zechariah

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Bless-ed be the Lord, the God of Is-ra-el;
he has come to his peo-ple and set them free.
He has raised up for us a might-y sav-ior,
born of the house of his serv-ant Da-vid.

Through his ho-ly proph-ets he prom-ised of old,
that he would save us from our en-e-mies,
from the hands of all who hate us.
He prom-ised to show mer-cy to our fath-ers

and to re-mem-ber his ho-ly cov-e-nant.
This was the oath he swore to our fath-er A-bra-ham,
to set us free from the hands of our en-e-mies,
Free to wor-ship him with-out fear,

ho-ly and right-eous in his sight
all the days of our life.
And you, my child, shall be called
the proph-et of the Most High,

for you will go be-fore the Lord to pre-pare his way,
To give his peo-ple knowl-edge of sal-va-tion
by the for-give-ness of their sins.
In the ten-der com-pas-sion of our God

the dawn from on high shall break up-on us,
To shine on those who dwell in dark-ness
and the shad-ow of death,
and to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

A reading from Matthew 27:1-10

When it was early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people plotted against Jesus to execute him. They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

Now when Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus had been condemned, he regretted what he had done and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders, saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood!” But they said, “What is that to us? You take care of it yourself!” So Judas threw the silver coins into the temple and left. Then he went out and hanged himself. The chief priests took the silver and said, “It is not lawful to put this into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.” After consulting together they bought the Potter’s Field with it, as a burial place for foreigners. For this reason that field has been called the “Field of Blood” to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: “They took the thirty silver coins, the price of the one whose price had been set by the people of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

Here ends the reading.
Thanks be to God!

Friday - Song to the Lamb

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Splen-dor and ho-nor and king-ly pow-er
are yours by right, O Lord our God,
For you cre-at-ed eve-ry-thing that is,
and by your will they were cre-at-ed and have their be-ing;

And yours by right, O Lamb that was slain,
for with your blood you have re-deemed for God,
From eve-ry fam-i-ly, lan-guage, peo-ple, and na-tion,
a king-dom of priests to serve our God.

And so, to him who sits up-on the throne,
and to Je-sus Christ the Lamb,
Be wor-ship and praise, do-min-ion and splen-dor,
for ev-er and for ev-er-more.

Glo-ry to the Fath-er, and to the Son,
and to the Ho-ly Spi-rit:
as it was in the be-gin-ning, is now,
and will be for ev-er. A-men.

Prayers

Friday Creed

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

We be-lieve in God, the Fath-er al-might-y,
cre-a-tor of heav-en and earth.
We be-lieve in Je-sus Christ,
his on-ly son, our Lord.

He was con-ceived by the pow-er of the Ho-ly Spi-rit
and born of the Vir-gin Ma-ry.
He suf-fered un-der Pon-tius Pi-late,
was cru-ci-fied, died, and was bur-ied.

He de-scend-ed to the dead.
On the third day he rose a-gain.
He a-scend-ed into heav-en,
and is seat-ed at the right hand of the Fath-er.

He will come a-gain
to judge the liv-ing and the dead.
We be-lieve in the Ho-ly Spi-rit,
the ho-ly cath-o-lic Church,

the com-mun-ion of saints,
the for-give-ness of sins,
the res-ur-rec-tion of the bod-y,
and the life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.

Friday - Our Father

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

The Lord be with you.
And al-so with you. A-men.
Our Fath-er in heav-en,
hal-low-ed be your Name.

Your king-dom come,
your will be done, on earth as in heav-en.
Give us to-day our dai-ly bread.
For-give us our sins as we for-give those who sin a-gainst us.

Save us from the time of tri-al,
and de-liv-er us from e-vil.
For the king-dom, the pow-er, and the glo-ry are yours,
now and for ev-er. A-men.

Friday - Evening Suffrages A

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.
Clothe your min-is-ters with right-eous-ness;
Let your peo-ple sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For on-ly in you can we live in safe-ty.
Lord, keep this na-tion un-der your care;
And guide us in the way of jus-tice and truth.

Let your way be known up-on earth;
Your sav-ing health a-mong all na-tions.
Let not the need-y, O Lord, be for-got-ten;
Nor the hope of the poor be tak-en a-way.

Cre-ate in us clean hearts, O God;
And sus-tain us by your Ho-ly Spi-rit.
Show us your mer-cy, O Lord;
And grant us your sal-va-tion.

Collect of the Day

O God, the King of glory, you have exalted your only Son Jesus Christ with great triumph to your kingdom in heaven: Do not leave us comfortless, but send us your Holy Spirit to strengthen us, and exalt us to that place where our Savior Christ has gone before; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, in glory everlasting.

Amen.

A Collect for Fridays

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies' sake.

Amen.

Prayer for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

A Prayer of Saint Chrysostom

Tenor     Soprano     Response     Cantor     Bass     Alto     PDF     All

Al-might-y God,
you have giv-en us grace at this time
with one ac-cord
to make our com-mon sup-pli-ca-tion to you;

and you have prom-ised
through your well-be-lov-ed Son
that when two or three are ga-thered to-geth-er in his Name
you will be in the midst of them:

Ful-fill now, O Lord, our de-sires and pe-ti-tions
as may be best for us;
grant-ing us in this world knowl-edge of your truth,
and in the age to come life ev-er-last-ing. A-men.
