Evensong February 25, 2020

HYMNODY for practice

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, forgive! Amen.

AC Single Chant Tune

O gracious light,
pure brightness of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
and our eyes behold the vesper light,we sing your praises,
O God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

O Son of God, O Giver of life,
and to be glorified through all the worlds.

PSALMS

Psalm 36 Dixit injustus
1   There is a voice of rebellion deep in the heart  | of the | wicked; *
there is no fear of  | God be- | fore his  | eyes.
2   He flatters himself in  | his own | eyes *
that his hateful sin  | will not | be found  | out.
3   The words of his mouth are wicked and |   deceit- | ful; *
he has left off acting wise-  | ly and | doing | good.
4   He thinks up wickedness upon his bed
and has set himself in  | no good | way; *
he does not abhor  | that which | is e-  | vil.
5   Your love, O LORD, reaches to  | the hea- | vens, *
and your faith-  | fulness | to the  | clouds.
6   Your righteousness is like the strong mountains,
your justice like  | the great | deep; *
you save both  | man and | beast, O |   LORD.
7   How priceless is your  | love, O | God! *
your people take refuge under the  | shadow | of your | wings.
8   They feast upon the abundance  | of your | house; *
you give them drink from the  | river of | your de- | lights.
9   For with you is the  | well of | life, *
and in  | your light  | we see | light.
10   Continue your loving-kindness to those  | who know | you, *
and your favor to those  | who are | true of |  heart.
11   Let not the foot of the proud  | come near | me, *
nor the hand of the  | wicked | push me  | aside.
12   See how they are fallen, those who work  | wicked- | ness! *
they are cast down and shall  | not be | able to | rise.

Psalm 39 Dixi, Custodiam
1   I said, "I will keep watch up-  | on my | ways, *
so that I do not  | offend | with my  | tongue.
2   I will put a muzzle  | on my | mouth *
while the wicked  | are in | my pres-  | ence."
3   So I held my tongue and  | said no- | thing; *
I refrained from rash words; but my pain  | became | unbear-a- | ble.
4   My heart was hot within me;
while I pondered, the fire burst  | into | flame; *
I  | spoke out  | with my | tongue:
5   LORD, let me know my end and the number  | of my | days, *
so that I may know  | how short | my life  | is.
6   You have given me a mere handful of days,
and my lifetime is as nothing  | in your | sight; *
truly, even those who stand erect are  | but a | puff of | wind.
7   We walk about like a shadow, and in vain we are  | in tur- | moil; *
we heap up riches and cannot tell  | who will | gather | them.
8   And now, what  | is my | hope? *
O Lord,  | my hope  | is in | you.
9   Deliver me from all my  | transgres- | sions *
and do not make me  | the taunt | of the  | fool.
10   I fell silent and did not op-  | en my | mouth, *
for surely it  | was you | that did  | it.
11   Take your afflic-  | tion from | me; *
I am worn down by  | the blows | of your  | hand.
12   With rebukes for sin you punish us;
like a moth you eat away all that is  | dear to | us; *
truly, everyone is  | but a | puff of  | wind.
13   Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear  | to my | cry; *
hold not  | your peace  | at my | tears.
14   For I am but a sojourn-  | er with | you, *
a wayfarer, as  | all my | forebears  | were.
15   Turn your gaze from me, that I may be  | glad a- | gain, *
before I go my  | way and | am no  | more.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.
World without end. Amen, amen!

The Lessons

A reading from John 18:28-38 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate's headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?" They answered, "If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you." Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law." The Jews replied, "We are not permitted to put anyone to death." (This was to fulfill what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death he was to die.) Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?" Pilate replied, "I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed you over to me. What have you done?" Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my followers would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here." Pilate asked him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice." Pilate asked him, "What is truth?" After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them, "I find no case against him.
Here ends the Reading.

LEVAS2 (L170) Yield not to temptation

Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

1 Yield not to temptation,
For yielding is sin;
Each vict’ry will help you,
Some other to win;
Fight, still pressing onward,
Dark passions subdue;
Refrain:
Look ever to Jesus,
He will carry you through.
Ask the savior to help you,
Comfort, strengthen and keep you;
He is willing to aid you,
He will carry you through.
2 Shun evil companions,
Bad language disdain;
God’s name hold in rev’rence,
Nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest,
Kind-hearted and true; [Refrain]
3 To him that o’ercometh,
God giveth a crown;
Through faith we will conquer,
Though often cast down;
He who is our savior,
Our strength will renew; [Refrain]

LEVAS2 (L187) Farther along

Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

1 Tempted and tried, we’re oft made to wonder
Why it should be thus all the day long;
While there are others living about us,
Never molested, though in the wrong.

Refrain:
Farther along we’ll know more about it,
Farther along we’ll understand why;
Cheer up, my brother, live in the sunshine,
We’ll understand it all by and by.
2 Often when death has taken our loved ones,
Leaving our home so lone and so drear,
Then do we wonder why others prosper,
Living so wicked year after year. [Refrain]
3 “Faithful till death,” saith our loving Master;
Short is our time to labor and wait;
Then will our toiling seem to be nothing,
When we shall pass the heavenly gate. [Refrain]

When we see Jesus coming in glory
When He comes from His home in the sky
Then we shall meet Him in that bright mansion
We'll understand it all by and by

WLP (W810) You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord (On Eagle's Wings)

Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord,
Who abide in His shadow for life,
Say to the Lord, "My Refuge,
My Rock in Whom I trust."
Refrain
And He will raise you up on eagle's wings,
Bear you on the breath of dawn,
Make you to shine like the sun,
And hold you in the palm of His Hand.
The snare of the fowler will never capture you,
And famine will bring you no fear;
Under His Wings your refuge,
His faithfulness your shield.
Refrain
For to His angels He's given a command,
To guard you in all of your ways,
Upon their hands they will bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
Refrain

LEVAS2 (L054) Nearer my God to Thee

Piano     PARTS     Soprano     Alto     Tenor     Bass

1 Nearer, my God, to Thee,
nearer to Thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me;
Still all my song would be
Refrain:
Nearer, my God, to Thee,
Nearer my God, to Thee,
Nearer to Thee.
2 Though like the wanderer,
The sun goes down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone;
Yet in my dreams I’d be [Refrain]
3 There let the way appear,
Steps unto heav’n;
All that Thou sendest me,
In mercy giv’n;
Angels to beckon me (refrain)
4 Then, with my waking thoughts,
Bright with Thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs,
Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be [Refrain]
5 Or if on joyful wing,
Cleaving the sky,
Sun, moon and stars forgot,
Upwards I fly,
Still all my song shall be [Refrain]

LEVAS2 (L035) O how He loves you and me

HYMNODY    (Playlist)

LEVAS2 (L019)     Wayfaring stranger

Piano     PARTS
1 I’m just a poor wayfaring stranger,
I’m trav’ling through this world below;
There is no sickness, toil, nor danger,
In that bright world to which I go.
I’m going there to see my father,
I’m going there no more to roam;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.
2 I know dark clouds will gather o’er me,
I know my pathway’s rough and steep;
But golden fields lie out before me,
Where weary eyes no more shall weep.
I’m going there to see my mother,
She said she’d meet me when I come;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.
3 I want to sing salvations story,
In concert with the blood-washed band;
I want to wear a crown of glory,
When I get home to that good land.
I’m going there to see my brothers,
They passed before me one by one;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.
4 I’ll soon be free from every trial,
This form will rest beneath the sod;
I’ll drop the cross of self-denial,
And enter in my home with God.
I’m going there to see my Saviour,
Who shed for me His precious blood;
I’m just a going over Jordan,
I’m just a going over home.

WLP (757)   Will you come and follow me?

Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know and never be the same?

Will you let my love be shown? Will you let my name be known,

will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind if I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind and never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean and do such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Will you love the "you" you hide if I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside and never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found to reshape the world around,
through my sight and touch and sound in you and you in me?

Christ your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In Your company I'll go where Your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow in you and you in me.
