HYMNODY for practice

Opening Hymn: LEVAS2 (L176)    An Evening Prayer

1 If I have wounded any soul today,
If I have caused one foot to go astray,
If I have walked in my own willful way,
Dear Lord, forgive!
2 If I have uttered idle words or vain,
If I have turned aside from want or pain,
Lest I offend some other through the strain,
Dear Lord, forgive!
3 If I have been perverse, or hard, or cold,
If I have longed for shelter in the fold,
When thou hast given me some fort to hold,
Dear Lord, forgive!
4 Forgive the sins I have confessed to thee;
Forgive the secret sins I do not see;
O guide me, love me, and my keeper be.
Dear Lord, forgive! Amen.

and to be glorified through all the worlds.

PSALMS

Psalm 78: Part II Quoties exacerbaverunt

40   How often the people disobeyed him in the |wilder|ness *
and offended |him in |the de|sert!
41   Again and again they |tempted |God *
and provoked the Holy |One of |Isra|el.
42   They did not remember |his po|wer *
in the day when he ransomed them from the enemy;
43   How he wrought his signs |in E|gypt *
and his omens |in the |field of |Zoan.
44   He turned their rivers |into |blood, *
so that they could |not drink |of their |streams.
45   He sent swarms of flies among them, which |ate them |up, *
and |frogs, which |destroyed |them.
46   He gave their crops to the cat|erpil|lar, *
the fruit of their |toil to |the lo|cust.
47   He killed their |vines with |hail *
and their |syca|mores with |frost.
48   He delivered their cattle |to hail|stones *
and their livestock |to hot |thunder|bolts.
49   He poured out upon them his blaz|ing an|ger: *
fury, indignation, and distress, a troop of |destroy|ing an|gels.
50   He gave full rein to his anger; he did not spare their |souls from |death; *
but delivered |their lives |to the |plague.
51   He struck down all the firstborn |of E|gypt, *
the flower of manhood in |the dwel|lings of |Ham.
52   He led out his peo|ple like |sheep *
and guided them in the wild|erness |like a |flock.
53   He led them to safety, and they were |not a|fraid; *
but the sea over|whelmed their |ene|mies.
54   He brought them to his |holy |land, *
the mountain |his right |hand had |won.
55   He drove out the Canaanites before them and apportioned an inheritance to |them by |lot; *
he made the tribes of Israel |to dwell |in their |tents.
56   But they tested the Most High God, and |defied |him, *
and did not |keep his |command|ments.
57   They turned away and were disloyal like |their fa|thers; *
they were undependable |like a |warped |bow.
58   They grieved him with their |hill-al|tars *
they provoked his displea|sure with |their i|dols.
59   When God heard this, he |was an|gry *
and utterly re|jected |Isra|el.
60   He forsook the shrine |at Shi|loh, *
the tabernacle where he had lived |among |his peo|ple.
61   He delivered the ark into cap|tivi|ty, *
his glory into the |adver|sary's |hand.
62   He gave his people |to the |sword *
and was angered against |his in|heri|tance.
63   The fire consumed |their young |men; *
there were no wedding |songs for |their mai|dens.
64   Their priests fell |by the |sword, *
and their widows made |no la|menta|tion.
65   Then the LORD woke as |though from |sleep, *
like a warri|or re|freshed with |wine.
66   He struck his enemies on |the back|side *
and put them to |perpe|tual |shame.
67   He rejected the tent |of Jo|seph *
and did not choose the |tribe of |Ephra|im;
68   He chose instead the tribe |of Ju|dah *
and Mount |Zion, |which he |loved.
69   He built his sanctuary like the heights |of hea|ven, *
like the earth which he |founded |for e|ver.
70   He chose David |his ser|vant, *
and took him a|way from |the sheep|folds.
71   He brought him from follo|wing the |ewes, *
to be a shepherd over Jacob his people and over Israel |his in|heri|tance.
72   So he shepherded them with a faithful |and true |heart *
and guided them with the skill|fulness |of his |hands.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be.
World without end. Amen, amen!

The Lessons

A reading from John 7:53-8:11 Then each of them went home, while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. Early in the morning he came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her." And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?" She said, "No one, sir." And Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again."

Here ends the Reading.

Blessed Absalom (Feb 13)

Piano    PARTS    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass

1 Born in bondage, born in shackles,
Born stripped of all dignity,
Abs’lom Jones was bound, determined,
That he would one day be free.
Blessed Abs’lom, leads us, guides us,
In the bonds of unity.
2 Seeking to expand horizons,
Bible, primer he did find;
To each word he was attentive,
Learning, lest he fall behind.
Blessed Abs’lom, liberates us
From the prison of our mind.
3 When in Philadelphia settled,
He sought persons in great need,
Dedicated to empow’rment,
His own people did he lead.
Blessed Abs’lom, pray that we from
All indiff’rence may be freed.
4 One fine morning, while at worship,
Wrested from his knees in prayer;
He, his friends, were thus evicted:
“You no more may praise God here.”
Blessed Abs’lom, pray that we may
Stand steadfast and persevere.
5 Founded he Saint Thomas’ church for
Afric’s sons and daughters blest;
Full-fledged members of Christ’s Body,
They no longer were oppressed.
Blessed Abs’lom, pray that we may
Be the church at Christ’s behest.
6 Blessed Abs’lom Jones, first priest of
Afric’s stock within our fold;
May we, inspired by your witness
Raise up priests with hearts of gold!
Blessed Abs’lom, pioneer, prophet
May your story long be told!
7 Praise to Christ the Liberator;
Praise Creator ever blest;
Praise the Spirit, Source of comfort,
North to south, and east to west:
Blessed Abs’lom, priest, exemplar,
In God’s bosom now at rest.

PSALMS

Psalm 68 Exsurgat Deus
  Let God arise, and let his enemies  |  be scat- |  tered; *
let those who hate  |  him flee  |  before |  him.
  Let them vanish like smoke when the wind drives  |  it a-  |  way; *
as the wax melts at the fire,
     so let the wicked perish at  |  the pres- |  ence of  |  God.

  But let the righteous be glad and rejoice  |  before  |  God; *
let them also be  |  merry  |  and joy-  |  ful.
  Sing to God, sing praises to his Name;
exalt him who rides upon  |  the hea-  |  vens; *

YAHWEH is his Name,  |  rejoice  |  before |   him!
  Father of orphans, defender  |  of wid-  |  ows, *
God in his  |  holy hab-  |  ita-  |  tion! God gives the solitary a home and brings forth prisoners in-  |  to free-  |  dom; *
but the rebels shall live in  |  dry pla-  |  ces.
  O God, when you went forth  |  before  |  your peo-  |  ple, *
when you marched  |  through the |  wilder-  |  ness,
  The earth shook, and the skies poured down rain,
     at the presence of God, the God  |  of Si-  |  nai, *

at the presence of God, the  |  God of  |  Isra-  |  el.
  You sent a gracious rain, O God, upon your in-  |  heri-  |  tance; *
you refreshed the land  |  when it  |  was wear-  |  y.
10   Your people found their  |  home in  |  it; *
in your goodness, O God, you have made pro-  |  vision  |  for the  |  poor.
11   The Lord  |  gave the  |  word; *
great was the company of women  |  who bore  |  the tid-  |  ings:
12   Kings with their armies are flee-  |  ing a-  |  way; *
the women at home are |  divid-  |  ing the  |  spoils.
13   Though you lingered among  |  the sheep  |  folds, *
you shall be like a dove whose wings are covered with silver,
     whose fea-  |  thers are |  like green  |  gold.

14   When the Almighty  |  scattered  |  kings, *
it was like snow  |  falling  |  in Zal-  |  mon.
15   O mighty mountain, O hill  |  of Ba-  |  shan! *
O rugged mountain,  |  O hill  |  of Ba-  |  shan!
16   Why do you look with envy, O rugged mountain,
     at the hill which God chose for his  |  resting  |  place? *

truly, the LORD will  |  dwell there  |  for ev-  |  er.
17   The chariots of God are twenty thousand,
even thousands  |  of thou-  |  sands; *

the Lord comes in  |  holiness |  from Si-  |  nai.
18   You have gone up on high and led captivity captive;
you have received gifts even from your  |  ene-  |  mies, *

that the LORD God  |  might dwell  |  among  |  them.
19   Blessed be the Lord  |  day by  |  day, *
the God of our salvation,  |  who bears  |  our bur-  |  dens.
20   He is our God, the God of our  |  salva-  |  tion; *
God is the LORD, by  |  whom we  |  escape  |  death.
21   God shall crush the heads of his  |  enem-  |  ies, *
and the hairy scalp of those who go on still  |  in their  |  wicked-  |  ness.
22   The Lord has said, "I will bring them back  |  from Ba-  |  shan; *
I will bring them back from  |  the depths  |  of the  |  sea;
23   That your foot may be  |  dipped in  |  blood, *
the tongues of your dogs in the  |  blood of  |  your ene-  |  mies."
24   They see your proces-  |  sion, O  |  God, *
your procession into the sanctuary,  |  my God  |  and my  |  King.
25   The singers go before, musicians fol-  |  low af-  |  ter, *
in the midst of maidens playing  |  upon  |  the hand  |  drums.
26   Bless God in the con-  |  grega-  |  tion; *
bless the LORD, you that are of the  |  fountain  |  of Isra-  |  el.
27   There is Benjamin, least of the tribes, at the head;
     the princes of Judah in a  |  compan-  |  y; *

and the princes of Zebu-  |  lon and  |  Naphtal-  |  i.
28   Send forth your  |  strength, O  |  God; *
establish, O God, what  |  you have  |  wrought for  |  us.
29   Kings shall bring  |  gifts to  |  you, *
for your temple's sake  |  at Je-  |  rusa-  |  lem.
30   Rebuke the wild beast  |  of the  |  reeds, *
and the peoples, a herd of  |  wild bulls  |  with its  |  calves.
31   Trample down those who lust  |  after  |  silver; *
scatter the peoples  |  that de-  |  light in  |  war.
32   Let tribute be brought out  |  of E-  |  gypt; *
let Ethiopia stretch  |  out her  |  hands to  |  God.
33   Sing to God, O  |  kingdoms  |  of the  |  earth; *
sing  |  praises  |  to the  |  Lord.
34   He rides in the heavens, the  |  ancient  | heavens; *
he sends forth his  |  voice, his  |  mighty  |  voice.
35   Ascribe  |  power to  |  God; *
his majesty is over Israel; his  |  strength is  |  in the  |  skies.
36   How wonderful is God in his  |  holy  |  places! *
the God of Israel giving strength and power to his  |  people!
     |  Blessed be |  God!

The Lessons

A reading from John 6:41-51 Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, "I am the bread that came down from heaven." They were saying, "Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, 'I have come down from heaven'?"

Jesus answered them, "Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father.

Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh."

Here ends the Reading.

4 At his feet the six-winged seraph;
cherubim, with sleepless eye
veil their faces to the Presence,
as with ceaseless voice they cry,
"Alleluia, alleluia!
Alleluia, Lord Most High!"

Hymnal 1982 (657): Love divine, all loves excelling

Recordings:    Piano    Parts    Soprano    Alto    Tenor    Bass

1 Love divine, all loves excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesus, thou art all compassion,
pure, unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.
2 Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
nevermore thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.
3 Finish then thy new creation;
pure and spotless let us be;
let us see thy great salvation
perfectly restored in thee:
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise.
